Three Police Officers Shot Dead In Central France

A gunman has shot dead three police officers who were called to a domestic violence incident in central France.

The suspect, 48, said to be known to authorities on child custody issues, was later found dead, officials said.

A woman had fled to the roof of a house in a remote village near Saint-Just in the early hours of Wednesday. The gunman killed one officer and wounded another. He then set fire to the house and killed two more officers who arrived. The woman was rescued.

President Emmanuel Macron said the nation shared the grief of the families of the police officers.

Elite tactical police officers remain at the scene in the village in the Puy-de-Dôme department, in France’s Massif Central mountain region.

Navalny Dupes Russian Agent Into Confessing Poision Plot

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny duped a Russian FSB state agent into revealing details of an attack on him with the nerve agent Novichok, the investigative group Bellingcat reports.

Mr Navalny reportedly impersonated a security official to call the agent. The agent, Konstantin Kudryavtsev, told him the Novichok had been placed in a pair of Mr Navalny’s underpants.

Mr Navalny, who is still recovering in Berlin, posted a recording of the long conversation on his YouTube channel. He collapsed on board a Russian airliner in August in the attack, which nearly proved fatal.

As part of Mr Navalny’s ruse to elicit more details of the assassination attempt, Bellingcat says the call to Mr Kudryavtsev was set up to indicate it was coming from a Federal Security Service (FSB) landline.

Former Mexican Governor Shot Dead In Puerto Vallarta Restaurant

Security has been reinforced in the popular Mexican beach resort of Puerto Vallarta after a former governor of the state of Jalisco was killed on Friday.

Aristóteles Sandoval, 46, was shot in the back as he went to the bathroom at a restaurant in the city. One of his bodyguards was also shot and injured. Mr Sandoval, who governed Jalisco from 2013 to 2018, died in hospital.

The killing is one of the most high-profile attacks on a Mexican politician in recent years.

Mr Sandoval was having dinner at the Distrito 5 restaurant in the centre of Puerto Vallarta with three other people when the attack occurred.

Investigators believe that it was meticulously planned as the gunman waited until Mr Sandoval went to the bathroom, leaving behind his two bodyguards. He was shot in the back, but was not instantly killed. When his bodyguards tried to get him out of the restaurant and to a hospital, gunmen outside opened fire on them.

Australian Couple’s Death Treated As Terrorism By Police

The death of an elderly couple at their home in Australia is being treated as terrorism, detectives have said.

The bodies of Maurice Anthill, 87, and his 86-year-old wife Zoe, were found at their home in Brisbane on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, 22-year-old Raghe Abdi was shot dead by police on a highway on the outskirts of the city after threatening officers with a knife.

Detectives have not yet confirmed how the Anthill’s died but say officers found evidence that Abdi had been in their home.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the known extremist was acting alone, adding: “We had no choice but to declare this as a terrorism incident.”

Abdi had been influenced by Islamic State, according to Australian police, and was arrested on suspicion of joining extremist groups in May 2019 while trying to board a flight to Somalia.

Top US General Meets With Taliban On Peace Talks

America’s most senior general met Taliban peace negotiators on Tuesday to urge a reduction in violence, the US military said.

Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, met negotiators in Doha, Qatar, before flying to Kabul to meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. The Taliban and the Afghan government are holding peace talks in Doha.

Senior US officials have warned publicly that an increase in Taliban violence is endangering the talks. The US is drastically reducing the number of its troops in the country ahead of the end of the Trump administration in January.

A spokesperson for the military said Gen Milley had “discussed the need for an immediate reduction of violence and accelerate progress towards a negotiated political solution which contributes to regional stability and safeguards US national interests”.

According to the Associated Press, Gen Milley told a select group of reporters on the trip: “The most important part of the discussions that I had with both the Taliban and the government of Afghanistan was the need for an immediate reduction in violence. Everything else hinges on that.”
