President Biden Approves Air Strike In Syria Targeting Militias

The US military has carried out an air strike targeting Iran-backed militias in Syria, the Pentagon says.

The attack destroyed “multiple facilities located at a border control point used by a number of Iranian-backed militant groups”, it said. It was the first military action ordered by the Biden administration and came in response to attacks against US and coalition personnel in Iraq.

A civilian contractor was killed in a rocket attack on US targets this month.

A US service member and five other contractors were also injured when the rockets hit sites in Irbil, including a base used by the US-led coalition, on 15 February.

Syrian Intelligence Officer Jailed For Torture By German Court

A German court has sentenced a former Syrian intelligence officer to four-and-a-half years in jail for complicity in crimes against humanity.

Prosecutors in Koblenz successfully argued that Eyad al-Gharib, 44, had helped to arrest protesters in 2011 who were later tortured and murdered. It is the first ever trial over alleged atrocities committed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Another Syrian – Anwar Raslan, 58 – remains on trial. Both fled Syria’s civil war and got asylum in Germany – but were arrested in 2019.

German prosecutors invoked the principle of “universal jurisdiction” for serious crimes to bring the case.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was detained at Dulles International Airport outside Washington DC. She is charged with participating in a conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.

Guzmán is currently serving a life sentence in New York for drug trafficking and money laundering. The 63-year-old is a former head of the Sinaloa cartel, which officials say was the biggest supplier of drugs to the US.

His trial in 2019 heard shocking revelations about his life, from drugging and raping girls as young as 13 to carrying out the cold-blooded murders of former cartel members and rivals.
