Three Shot, Two Dead In Overnight Jacob Blake Protests

Two people have been killed and one injured during a third night of unrest in the US city of Kenosha, sparked by the police shooting of a black man.

Police said three people had been shot, but gave no details about who was involved. Local media reports earlier said the violence was believed to have stemmed from a conflict between protesters and armed men guarding a petrol station.

Unrest broke out after Jacob Blake was shot and injured by police on Sunday. Video footage showed the 29-year-old being shot a number of times as he leaned into a car. His lawyers said it would take “a miracle” for him to walk again.

People have since defied emergency curfews in the city to join protests, which at times have turned violent. In their statement, Kenosha Police said officials responded to “reports of shots being fired and multiple gunshot victims” in the city at about 23:45 on Tuesday (04:45 Wednesday GMT). “The shooting resulted in two fatalities and a third gunshot victim was transported to a hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries,” the statement said.

Crime Figures In England And Wales Fall During Covid-19 Lockdown

Crime in England and Wales fell by almost a third in the first two full months of lockdown, according to the Office for National Statistics.

This was driven by falls in reported thefts and burglary, the ONS said. But the ONS said drug crime rose by up to 44% compared with the same period last year, due to targeted policing.

A survey also suggests the vast majority of adults (91%) are satisfied with the way police have dealt with the coronavirus restrictions. The figures, which are based on telephone research, support earlier data from police forces of a significant decline in offending during April and May.

The ONS data shows drug offences recorded by police rose by 22% in April to 16,570 and 44% in May to 20,687, compared with 13,535 and 14,343 for the respective months in 2019.

Hospital Find Signs Of Poisoning While Treating Alexi Navalny

The Berlin hospital treating the seriously ill Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, says he appears to have been poisoned.

The Charite hospital released a statement saying “clinical evidence suggests an intoxication through a substance belonging to the group of cholinesterase inhibitors”. His condition was “serious but not life-threatening” the statement said. He fell ill on an internal flight in Russia on Thursday.

Video appeared to show Mr Navalny, a dogged critic of the Kremlin, writhing in agony on the flight from Tomsk in Siberia to Moscow. His supporters suspect he drank poisoned tea.

“The exact substance is not yet known,” the hospital said. “Widespread analysis has begun. The effect of the poison – i.e. the inhibition of cholinesterase in the organism – has been proven several times and in independent laboratories.”

Mr Navalny is being treated with an antidote – atropine. But the clinical outcome remained unclear, the statement said, and warned of possible effects on the nervous system.

Police Killers Lenient Sentences To Be Reviewed

The killers of PC Andrew Harper have had their sentences referred to the Court of Appeal after the Attorney General considered them to be “unduly lenient”.

Suella Braverman QC said attacks against emergency workers should be “punished with the greatest severity”.

PC Harper, 28, suffered catastrophic injuries when he was dragged behind a getaway car in Berkshire last August. Henry Long, Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole were convicted of manslaughter.

The driver, Long, 19, was jailed for 16 years while his passengers Bowers and Cole, both 18, were sentenced to 13 years each. The three teenagers were all cleared of murder charges following a trial at the Old Bailey in London. The Attorney General, Suella Braverman, said PC Harper’s killing was a “horrific crime which resulted in the death of a much-respected police officer while he was on-duty, protecting his community”.

Putin Rival In Coma After Suspected Poisoning

Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny is unconscious in hospital suffering from suspected poisoning, his spokeswoman has said.

The anti-corruption campaigner fell ill during a flight and the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk, Kira Yarmysh said, adding that they suspected something had been mixed into his tea.

The Kremlin said that it wished Mr Navalny a “speedy recovery”.

Mr Navalny, 44, has been a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin.

In June he described a vote on constitutional reforms as a “coup” and a “violation of the constitution”. The reforms allow Mr Putin to serve another two terms in office.
