Trump Threatens North Korea With ‘Fire & Fury’

North Korea has said it is considering carrying out missile strikes on the US Pacific territory of Guam.

The North’s official news agency said it was considering a plan to fire medium-to-long-range rockets at Guam, where US strategic bombers are based.

It quoted an earlier military statement from Tuesday. President Donald Trump threatened Pyongyang with “fire and fury” on the same day. The exchanges mark a sharp rise in rhetoric between the two countries.

The UN recently approved further economic sanctions on North Korea, which Pyongyang said were a “violent violation of our sovereignty”, warning the US would “pay a price”.

On Wednesday, the official KCNA news agency said North Korea was “carefully examining the operational plan for making an enveloping fire at the areas around Guam” using its domestically made medium-to-long-range Hwasong-12 missiles.

The news agency reported a military statement issued on Tuesday, which probably came in response to US military drills in Guam. However, there has been no indication that any attack on Guam by North Korea is imminent.

French Soldiers Struck By Car In Deliberate Attack

A car has struck a group of soldiers in Paris, injuring six, two seriously, police say.

An urgent police operation is now under way to find the vehicle – reportedly a BMW – and driver involved in the incident in the north-western suburb of Levallois-Perret.

The Paris prosecutor says the anti-terror unit is investigating what happened. France has been under a state of emergency since November 2015.

On 13 November, 130 people were killed in a night of carnage in Paris, and more than 100 more have been killed in jihadist attacks since. They include a string of assaults on the heavily armed security forces who now dot the streets of the capital – the last only four days ago.

While the hunt for the perpetrator continues, the Paris prosecutors’ office said its anti-terrorism unit was looking into “attempted killings… in relation to a terrorist undertaking”. Wednesday’s attack at about 08:15 local time (06:15 GMT) took place outside a military barracks on the Place de Verdun in Levallois-Perret, the local mayor, Patrick Balkany, told BFMTV. He said he had no doubt that the “disgusting” act was deliberate.

Venezuela Warned By UN

The United Nations Human Rights Office has warned of “widespread and systematic use of excessive force” being used against protesters in Venezuela.

It also speaks of other human rights violations, including “violent house raids, torture and ill-treatment”. It says that the security forces are allegedly responsible for at least 46 deaths which occurred in protest-related violence.

A statement released on Tuesday says that “in the absence of responses from the Venezuelan authorities to requests for access, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein deployed a team of human rights officers to conduct remote monitoring of the human rights situation in the country “.

The UN human rights team conducted interviews remotely because its requests for access went unanswered by the Venezuelan authorities.

Many Shia Militia Killed Near Syrian Border

Dozens of Shia militiamen have been killed in an attack in Iraq close to the border with Syria, reports say.

There are conflicting accounts as to what happened. The group said US aircraft were to blame, though the US-led coalition denied this.

So-called Islamic State (IS) has said it killed scores of Iraqi troops in an ambush in the area. Iranian-backed militia and the US-led coalition are fighting separate campaigns against IS in Iraq. More than 30 fighters were killed and 85 wounded in the incident on Monday, reports say.

The Sayyed al-Shuhada militia, part of the government-allied Popular Mobilisation units (PMU), accused the US of deliberately attacking it. According to the militia, the US forces said in a statement that so-called smart bombs had been used to target IS positions in the area.

Drones Will Be Shot Down By US Military

The Pentagon has given US military bases permission to shoot down or otherwise destroy consumer drones flying overhead and nearby.

A spokesman revealed that guidance was issued on 4 August. He said the exact terms of the policy were classified.

The move comes days after the US Army ordered its own troops to stop using drones made by Chinese manufacturer DJI because of alleged “cyber-vulnerabilities”. It became illegal to fly personal drones within 400ft (122m) of the US’s 133 military facilities in April.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced at the time that those who disobeyed the order would face financial penalties and possible criminal charges.

The watchdog has forecast that US-based hobbyists will own more than 3.5 million drones by 2021, and that there could be a further 1.6 million commercial models in operation. The technology’s growing popularity has raised privacy and safety concerns.
