Yemeni PM Basindwa unhurt in assassination bid

Yemeni Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Basindwa has survived an assassination attempt unharmed, officials in the capital Sanaa say.

Gunmen in a vehicle opened fire on the PM’s motorcade as he returned home from his office, one of his advisers said.

It is the first time Mr Basindwa has come under attack, the AFP news agency says, although other members of his cabinet have previously been targeted.

The government is battling militants of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

A senior intelligence officer was killed by suspected militants in southern Labous province late on Friday.

Militants die during drone attacks in Yemen

At least 14 suspected al-Qaeda militants have been killed in Yemen in three drone strikes, officials say.

The number of such strikes in Yemen, presumably launched by the US, has been stepped up over the past month.

The latest attacks come a day after Yemeni authorities said they had foiled a major al-Qaeda plot against oil pipelines and ports.

Yemen is deemed a stronghold of an al-Qaeda offshoot considered by Washington to be the most dangerous to the West.

In the latest strike on Thursday evening, Yemeni officials told BBC Arabic that a drone targeted a group of suspected militants, killing four of them in Wadi al-Jadd in the southern province of Hadramout.

Two strikes earlier in the day in Marib and Hadramout provinces killed 10 suspected militants, the security officials said.

UK And US Withdraw Staff During Security Crackdown In Yemen

Yemen’s security forces have been placed on a state of high alert amid fears of an al-Qaeda-linked attack.

In the capital, Sanaa, tanks and troops have surrounded foreign missions, government offices and the airport.

Both the US, which closed 20 embassies worldwide on Sunday, and the UK have withdrawn diplomatic staff from Yemen and urged their citizens to leave.

Yemen has criticised the withdrawal, saying it served the interests of extremists.

The US embassy and consulate closures reportedly followed intercepted conversations between two senior al-Qaeda figures, including top leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, suggesting renewed terrorist attacks.
