RAC urges government to crackdown on untaxed foreign cars

The government is being urged to clamp down on untaxed foreign vehicles after the RAC warned they were costing the UK millions of pounds a year.

About 60,000 foreign vehicles are registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) every year.

However, the RAC said an estimated 15,000 others are not – the motoring organisation said this amounts to about £3m per year in uncollected tax.

The government said it would shortly announce plans to combat the problem.

The DVLA was unable to verify how many foreign vehicles coming into the UK are not registered, but did not contest the RAC’s figures.

The RAC’s head of external affairs Pete Williams said the situation was “beyond belief”.

An AK-47 and an Uzi machine gun were among weapons found by police searching a cottage in Suffolk, it has emerged.

Police said 50 officers had been involved in investigating the “significant” find in Potash Lane, Wyverstone, since 27 March.

A search of the area will continue for at least a week. Wyverstone Parish Council chairman James Arnold has been charged with firearms offences.

Mr Arnold, 49, of Potash Lane, is due at Ipswich Crown Court on 1 May.

He is accused of being in possession of a self-loading rifle gun, a bolt-action shotgun, a Uzi machine gun and an AK-47 assault rifle.

Police said they were initially called to the house over an allegation of assault, and then carried out a search warrant.

In upgraded forecasts, it estimates economic growth will be 2.8% this year – up from its earlier estimate of 2.7%.

But it also warns of an “unacceptably high” level of youth unemployment.
