Iraqi PM Maliki rejects emergency government

Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has rejected calls for a national salvation government to help counter the offensive by jihadist-led Sunni rebels.

Such calls represented a “coup against the constitution and an attempt to end the democratic experience”, he warned.

The US has led appeals to the country’s political leaders to rise above sectarian and ethnic divisions.

Government forces have been unable to recapture the territory seized by the rebels this month.

US forces arrive in Baghdad to advise Iraqi troops

The first US troops deployed to assist the Iraqi army in combating a growing Sunni militant insurgency have arrived and begun work, the Pentagon has said.

Nearly half the 300 special operations soldiers promised by US President Barack Obama are in Baghdad or on the front lines of the fight.

The rest are expected within days.

Also, US Secretary of State John Kerry called for regional unity to expel the Sunni Isis rebels who have taken large swathes of Iraq.

On Tuesday, two teams totalling 40 US troops began work assessing Iraqi troops on the front line, the Pentagon said.

John Kerry in Baghdad as Isis rebels advance

US Secretary of State John Kerry has vowed “intense and sustained support” for Iraq after meeting key politicians in the capital, Baghdad.

His visit comes as Sunni insurgents expand their control of towns across the country’s north and west.

The rebels are bearing down on a vital dam near Haditha, and have captured all of the border crossings to Syria and Jordan from government forces.

The key airport in the northern town of Tal Afar has also fallen to the rebels.

Iraq violence escalates as cafe car bomb kills 11

In a village just north of Baghdad, a car bomb killed three police officers and wounded nine others.

In the south of the capital, a roadside bomb hit a vehicle carrying Sahwa militiamen fighting al-Qaeda, killing two and injuring two others. Another blast targeted an army patrol killing one Iraqi soldier and wounding two others, reports said.

No-one has said they carried out the bombings.

Violence in Iraq this year has reached a level not seen since 2008.

The UN has said the monthly death toll dropped to 659 in November, including 565 civilians and 94 members of the Iraqi security forces, compared with 979 in October.

Baghdad struck by deadly bomb blasts

At least 29 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a series of bomb attacks in mostly Shia areas of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, officials say.

The deadliest attack was in the central Sadriya district, where a car bomb was detonated at an crowded market.

Bombs exploded at around the same time on busy streets in the Shaab, Tobchi, Karrada, Azamiya and Amil areas.

Sectarian violence has surged across the country in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.

The UN says 979 people – including 158 police and 127 military personnel – were killed in violent attacks in October. More than 6,500 civilians have died since January.
