Muslim Brotherhood Leader Mohammed Badie arrested

The most senior leader in Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed Badie, has been arrested in Cairo.

Mr Badie, who was wanted over alleged incitement to violence and murder, has been temporarily replaced as “general guide” by his deputy, Mahmoud Ezzat.

In another development, Egypt’s ex-vice president Mohamed ElBaradei is to face trial on charges of breaching national trust after resigning last week.

Almost 900 people have been killed in the country since Wednesday.

Among them are 36 Islamist protesters who died in a prison van in Cairo on Sunday.

Musharraf arrested over assassination of Benazir Bhutto

Pakistani ex-President Pervez Musharraf has been charged in connection with the 2007 assassination of opposition leader and former PM Benazir Bhutto.

The former military ruler has denied charges of murder, criminal conspiracy to murder and facilitation of murder.

It is the first time a current or ex-army chief has been charged with a crime in Pakistan. Mr Musharraf says the charges are politically motivated.

Ms Bhutto was killed at an election rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007.

This indictment had long been expected but was delayed because of threats to the former military ruler from the Pakistani Taliban. When he finally made an appearance in the anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi it was amid tight security.

Domenico Rancadore arrested as suspected Mafia Boss

A mafia boss found living in London has been denied bail while Italian authorities seek his extradition.

Domenico Rancadore headed a family involved in extortion, racketeering and drug trafficking, Italian police claim.

The 64-year-old was arrested on Wednesday at a house in Uxbridge under a European Arrest Warrant.

A judge at Westminster Magistrates’ Court denied Rancadore bail and scheduled a full extradition hearing for 25 November.

A new arrest warrant was issued for Rancadore earlier after his lawyers claimed there were “significant deficiencies” in the original warrant.

He was then rearrested and refused bail by District Judge Quentin Purdy who said Rancadore had “actively evaded apprehension for a significant period of time”.

Chad former leader Hissene Habre arrested by Senegal Police

Police in Senegal have arrested Chad’s former leader Hissene Habre, who is wanted for alleged atrocities during his eight-year rule.

Mr Habre’s lawyer El Hadji Diouf said he was taken from his home in Dakar by paramilitary police to an unknown location on Sunday.

The 70 year old has been under house arrest since 2005 in Senegal, where he fled after being deposed in 1990.

He denies killing and torturing tens of thousands of his opponents.

Last year the UN’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Senegal to put him on trial or extradite him to face justice overseas.

His arrest comes days after US President Barack Obama praised the efforts of Senegal’s current President Macky Sall to bring him to trial at the start of his Africa tour.

Raja Pervez Ashraf: Pakistan Supreme Court orders arrest of PM

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the arrest of PM Raja Pervez Ashraf and 15 others over corruption allegations, raising fears of a political crisis just months ahead of an election.

Mr Ashraf denies accepting bribes when approving power generation projects as minister for water and power in 2010.

Analysts say that the move is unlikely to lead to his immediate removal.

It comes as a populist cleric led thousands of protesters in Islamabad, demanding the government resign.

There was a mood of mass euphoria as the news of the court’s order reached demonstrators, led by Tahirul Qadri. Some jumped for joy and others hugged, some crying.

“So far we have not received anything from the Supreme Court in writing. The government, the law ministry and the prime minister have not received any order from the Supreme Court,” Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira reportedly told private TV channel Geo.
