Arrests Made After Man Suffers Kidnapping Ordeal

Two men have been arrested by police investigating a kidnapping ordeal that lasted 50 hours. The 24-year-old victim was stripped naked, tied up and beaten after being lured to a house in Thornton Heath, Croydon by two acquaintances. He was set up by an armed gang who took his keys and burgled his parents’ home.

Two men, aged 29 and 19, have been arrested on suspicion of kidnap after CCTV was released in a public appeal by the Met Police. The pair are being questioned at a south London police station.

Police said they were hunting for another two suspects in connection with the “vicious and prolonged attack”, which may have involved up to 12 attackers.

One Person Arrested After Explosion At New York Bus Terminal

New York City Police say they are responding to reports of an explosion at a bus terminal in Manhattan.

The incident reportedly happened on Monday morning at the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square.

“The NYPD is responding to reports of an explosion of unknown origin at 42nd Street and 8th Ave, #Manhattan,” tweeted the department. “The A, C and E line are being evacuated at this time. Info is preliminary, more when available.”

Japan To Acquire New Defence Missiles

Japan plans to acquire medium-range air-to-surface missiles, expanding its strike capability to North Korea.

The announcement by Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera comes amid regular missile tests by North Korea and increased tensions between the nations.

The missiles will be deployed on the country’s fleet of fighter jets and have a range of up to 1,000km (3281ft). The move is likely to be controversial, as Japan limits its military to self-defence. But conservative Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pushed in recent months to loosen the country’s military restrictions, imposed in the wake of World World Two.

New laws introduced by Mr Abe will soon allow a broader interpretation of what the constitution does, and does not, permit. At the moment, Japan’s longest-range missiles can reach just 300km.

Report Into Wormwood Scrubs Finds Increase In Violence

Chronic staff shortages, food running out and a surge in violence were among the findings of a critical prison report into Wormwood Scrubs.

Inspectors also found areas of the west London jail were strewn with litter, attracting rats and cockroaches.

Chief inspector of prisons Peter Clarke said the findings painted an “extremely concerning picture”. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said the jail was recruiting staff in a bid to “urgently” raise standards.

The HM Inspectorate of Prisons’ report said Wormwood Scrubs, which holds more than 1,200 men, had high levels of often serious violence, resulting in some significant injuries. It also detailed how food routinely ran out in one wing, with staff having to source a half-used tray from another servery or distribute “mountain survival” dried food packs.

There had been a “dramatic” increase in violence against staff, with more than 90 assaults in the six months to July, when inspectors visited the jail.

British Man Found Guilty Of Joining IS

A British man has been found guilty of travelling to join so-called Islamic State in Syria.

Mohammed Abdallah received help from his brother Abdalraouf, who set up a “hub” of communication for would-be fighters from his home in Manchester.

The Old Bailey heard the 26-year-old intended to meet three fellow jihadis in Syria.

Abdallah, of Westerling Way, Moss Side, Manchester, was convicted following a trial lasting more than four weeks. He was found guilty of possessing an AK47 gun, receiving £2,000 for terrorism purposes and membership of IS. Abdallah was remanded into custody until his sentencing on Friday.

The jury heard the defendant was assisted by his disabled younger brother Abdalraouf, who was previously jailed for helping other members of the same network. Abdalraouf was left paralysed after he was shot while taking part in the 2011 Libyan uprising. His brother was outed as an IS fighter last year when an IS registration document listing him as a “specialist sniper” was leaked to Sky News by a defector.
