Man Shot And Arrested At Schipol Airport

Dutch police say they have shot and arrested a man who wielded a knife at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

The emergency prompted the authorities to evacuate part of Schiphol, one of Europe’s biggest airports.

The situation is under control, the military police tweeted.

No other injuries were reported. NOS news reports that Schiphol Plaza, a shopping area near passport control, was temporarily evacuated. There are no further details yet.

Israel Carries Out Air Strikes In The Gaza Strip

Israel has carried out fresh air strikes in the Gaza strip on what it said were military facilities belonging to the Islamist group Hamas.

The Israeli military said its aircraft had targeted training camps and weapons storage compounds. The strikes happened after four rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israeli territory.

Later, the Israeli military announced it had closed two border crossings with Gaza “due to the security events”. It did not say how long Kerem Shalom, which is the main entry point for goods entering Gaza, and Erez, which is used by pedestrians, would be shut.

There has been an escalation of hostilities since President Donald Trump gave US recognition to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel a week ago.

Palestinian security sources said 13 missiles were fired by Israeli helicopters targeting Hamas military facilities in Gaza City and Khan Younis.

Yemen Prison Almost Demolished In Saudi Air Strikes

At least 30 people are reported to have been killed in Saudi-led coalition air strikes on a rebel military police camp in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.

Most of the dead were said to be detainees at a prison inside the camp. A guard said an initial attack damaged one wing of the jail, prompting some inmates to try to escape. Then another strike almost demolished the building.

The coalition backs Yemen’s government in its war against the Houthi rebel movement.

More than 8,670 people have been killed and 49,960 injured since the coalition intervened in the conflict in 2015, according to the UN.

The fighting and a blockade by the coalition has also left 20.7 million people in need of humanitarian aid, created the world’s largest food security emergency, and led to a cholera outbreak that is thought to have killed 2,219 people since April. The raid on the camp in eastern Sanaa began in the early hours of Tuesday.

Gang Who Smuggled Drugs And Phones Into Prisons Jailed

The ringleader of a gang who smuggled drugs and phones into prisons using drones has been jailed for seven years and two months.

Former armed robber Craig Hickinbottom, 35, organised the flights from behind bars, Birmingham Crown Court was told. His gang put contraband worth an estimated £1m into jails as far apart as the West Midlands and Scotland.

The packages were attached to fishing lines and flown over prison walls. Nine others were also sentenced.

The group were convicted of organising 49 drone flights, although police believe the actual number may be higher. They were also found guilty of four “throw-overs”. One of the gang, Craig Hickinbottom’s brother, was seen with an improvised hook, ready to collect the goods from inside prison.

The gang were caught by chance, by cameras set up to film wildlife outside HMP Hewell in Worcestershire. Footage shows two of the men in a field, preparing a drone for flight, before sending it over the hedge to the prison grounds.

New York Explosion Was Attempted Terror Attack

The suspect being held after an attempted terror attack at New York City’s main bus terminal has said it was in retaliation for US attacks on so-called Islamic State, US media say.

Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant, was injured when a “low-tech explosive device” went off at the Port Authority terminal in Manhattan.

Police say Mr Ullah chose the location because of its Christmas posters. Three other people suffered minor wounds in the explosion on Monday. Mr Ullah is reported to be in a serious condition in hospital after suffering burns when the device, which was strapped to his body, exploded in an underpass at the busy terminal.

He told police investigators he had been inspired by Christmas terror attacks in Europe and selected the Port Authority bus terminal after seeing a number of festive posters on the subway walls, US media report. Mr Ullah said the planned attack had been motivated by US air strikes on IS targets in Syria and elsewhere, the New York Times reports.
