Bomb Squad Attend Norfolk Car Park After Device Found

An “unexploded device” has been found in a beach car park.

Norfolk Police was called to Horsey Gap, between Great Yarmouth and Cromer, at 09:00 BST after the discovery.

Visitors were being asked to avoid the area, the car park remains closed and a police cordon was put in place while the device was “safely contained”.

An Army bomb disposal team had been contacted and would be attending to “assess the item”, police said.

Conspiracy Theories Surge After Beirut Explosion

Early reports of the explosion in Beirut’s port began circulating on social media moments after the blast.

Whilst most of the videos appeared authentic, filmed by residents from their homes, rumours about the cause of the blast were also quickly shared on platforms such as Twitter and WhatsApp.

The videos circulating showed smaller explosions and an initial fire followed by the huge blast, which led to tweets suggesting it had happened at a firework factory.

Claims about fireworks seemed plausible at the time, but other viral tweets suggested the event was caused by a nuclear bomb because of the white mushroom-like cloud seen rising in some of the footage. A now-deleted tweet suggesting the explosion was “atomic” was shared by a verified Twitter account with over 100,000 followers and racked up thousands of shares and likes.

Over Half The City Of Beirut Damaged In Explosion

Rescue workers in Lebanon are searching for more than a hundred people who are missing after a huge explosion devastated the port area of the capital Beirut on Tuesday.

The blast killed at least 100 people and injured more than 4,000 others. The whole city was shaken by the explosion and a mushroom cloud could be seen spreading over the port area.

President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse. Ammonium nitrate is used as a fertiliser in agriculture and as an explosive.

President Aoun declared three days of mourning which started on Wednesday. Opening an emergency cabinet meeting, he said: “No words can describe the horror that has hit Beirut last night, turning it into a disaster-stricken city”. “Amid last night’s smoke, flames and destruction, I would like to laud the zeal of the Lebanese who rushed to the blast location and perimeter and the hospitals to offer support and assistance,” he added.
