Planned Cyber Attack On Ukraine Stopped By FBI

Preparations for a cyber-attack on Ukraine have been thwarted by the FBI.

It seized a website that was helping communicate with home routers infected with malware that would carry out the digital bombardment.

More than 500,000 routers in 54 countries had been infected by the “dangerous” malware and the FBI is now trying to clean up infected machines. The Kremlin has denied an allegation by Ukraine that Russia was planning a cyber-attack on the country.

A key step in thwarting the attack came on 23 May when a US court ordered website registrar Verisign to hand over control of the ToKnowAll.com domain to the FBI.

Infected machines regularly contacted that domain to update the malware with which they were infected. By taking control of the domain, the FBI will be able to log the location of infected machines and co-ordinate efforts to clean them up.

US/North Korea Summit Cancelled By President Trump

US President Donald Trump has cancelled a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

He said he had made the decision based on the “tremendous anger and open hostility” in a recent North Korean statement.

Mr Trump said it would be “inappropriate” to hold the summit as scheduled in Singapore on 12 June.

In a letter to Mr Kim, he said he was very much looking forward to meeting him “some day”. “I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have the long-planned meeting,” Mr Trump said.

“You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used,” he added.

Court Hears Case Of IS Supporter Who Suggested Targeting Prince George

An Islamic State supporter encouraged “lone wolf” attackers to target Prince George and inject poison into supermarket ice creams, a court heard.

Husnain Rashid, 32, of Leonard Street in Nelson, Lancashire provided an “e-toolkit for terrorism” over the internet, the prosecution alleges. He is accused of calling for the prince to be targeted at Thomas’s Battersea primary school in south-west London.

Mr Rashid denies six terrorism offences at Woolwich Crown Court.

The jury was told that the former mosque teacher, who also used to work for a tyre business, ran a “prolific” online channel named the “Lone Mujahid”. He is accused of posting a photograph of the four-year-old prince, along with his school’s address, a silhouette of a jihad fighter and the message: “Even the royal family will not be left alone.” He also allegedly advised a British terrorist in Syria named Omar Ali Hussain on how to make successful attacks, including bringing down “enemy” aircraft with lasers.

Turkish Court Sentences 104 Former Military Officers To Life

A Turkish court has sentenced 104 former military officers to life in prison for their involvement in a 2016 coup attempt, state media report.

They were given “aggravated life sentences”, which come with tougher terms than a normal life sentence.

The country’s president had previously said he backed reintroducing the death penalty for coup plotters. The failed coup to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan left at least 260 dead and 2,200 injured on 15 July 2016.

The Turkish government has since led a crackdown on alleged coup supporters, with the dismissal of more than 150,000 state employees and the arrest of some 50,000 people. Of the 280 ex-military people on trial, the court in Izmir also served lesser sentences to a further 52 defendants.

Sitting in Izmir in western Turkey, the court gave 21 people 20 years in prison for “assisting the assassination of the president”, while 31 others were sentenced to between seven and 11 years for “membership of a terrorist organisation”, state news agency Anadolu reported.
