London Tube Train Blast Being Treated As Terror Attack

An explosion on a Tube train in south-west London is being treated as terrorism, Scotland Yard has said.

Passengers were injured following the blast at 08:20 BST (07:20 GMT) at Parsons Green station in Fulham.

Pictures show a white bucket on fire inside a supermarket bag, but do not appear to show extensive damage to the inside of the Tube train carriage.

The Metropolitan Police said it was too early to confirm the cause of the fire and the station has been cordoned off.

Witnesses have described seeing at least one passenger with facial injuries. Others have spoken of “panic” as alarmed passengers left the train at Parsons Green station.

Second Ballistic Missile From North Korea Fired Over Japan

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile across Japan, creating new tension in the region after its nuclear bomb test less than two weeks ago.

The missile reached an altitude of about 770km (478 miles), travelling 3,700km before landing in the sea off Hokkaido, South Korea’s military says.  It flew higher and further than one fired over Japan late last month.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his country would “never tolerate” such “dangerous provocative action”.

South Korea responded within minutes by firing two ballistic missiles into the sea in a simulated strike on the North.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also condemned the launch and the UN Security Council will meet later on Friday in New York at the request of America and Japan.

Iraq Hit By Two Terror Attacks

At least 50 people have been killed in two attacks in southern Iraq, health officials say.

In the first attack, a suicide bomber detonated his vest and gunmen opened fire inside a roadside restaurant near Nasiriya, the capital of Dhiqar province, security sources said.

Soon afterwards, a car bomb exploded at a nearby checkpoint.

So-called Islamic State said it carried out the attacks. A number of Iranians are thought to be among the dead.

More than 80 people were injured in the attacks, many of them seriously, and the death toll could rise, health officials said.

Birmingham Shooting Leaves Man Dead

A man has been shot dead in what police described as a “shocking and cold-blooded killing”.

The 34-year-old was shot in Great Hampton Row, Hockley, Birmingham, on Wednesday evening. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

Great Hampton Row remained cordoned off on Thursday as investigations continue. It is the latest in a series of shootings in the city, with West Midlands Police recording 132 incidents of shots being fired since January.

The man has been identified but is not being named at this stage. Any witnesses are asked to come forward.

Community campaigner Desmond Jaddoo said he had visited the scene and spoken to residents, who said they were living in fear.

Chinese Born New Zealand MP Denies Spy Allegations

A New Zealand MP has denied allegations he is a Chinese spy, saying he has been the target of a racist smear campaign.

It is alleged that Chinese-born Jian Yang, 55, was investigated by New Zealand’s intelligence services for his links to Chinese military academies. But PM Bill English did not confirm whether Mr Yang had been investigated.

Jian Yang, an MP for the country’s ruling centre-right National party, condemned what he called “defamatory statements”. “This is a smear campaign by nameless people who are out to damage me and the National Party 10 days from an election, just because I am Chinese,” he said.

The allegations stem from a joint investigation by the Financial Times and New Zealand’s Newsroom. They say Mr Yang, who was elected in 2011, was investigated for the decade he spent in China, where he received military and intelligence training at so-called “spy schools”.
