Missile Over Northern Japan Fired By North Korea

North Korea has fired a missile over northern Japan in a move Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called an “unprecedented” threat to his country.

The missile, launched early on Tuesday Korean time, flew over Hokkaido island before crashing into the sea.

The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting in response.

North Korea has conducted a flurry of missile tests recently, but this is the first time it has fired what is thought to be a ballistic weapon over Japan.

On the two previous occasions its rockets crossed Japan – in 1998 and 2009 – North Korea said they were for satellite launch vehicles, not weapons.

This latest launch appears to be the first of a missile powerful enough to potentially carry a nuclear warhead. The South Korean military said the missile was fired eastward just before 06:00 local time (21:00 GMT) from near the North’s capital, Pyongyang – which is rare.

More Than 300 Number Plates Banned By DVLA

More than 300 number plates have been banned from use when the 67 vehicle registrations are released next week.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has withheld them because they are deemed potentially offensive.

Among those are MU67 DER, BU67 GER, DO67 GER, BA67 ARD, MU67 GER, HU67 WLY and OR67 SAM. Other “words” like AF67 HAN and NE67 ECT also make the list.

A DVLA spokesman said it had a responsibility to ensure plates do not “cause upset or offence”.
In June, the Swansea-based agency admitted that a plate JH11 HAD “slipped through the net”.

To certain eyes, or on some deliberately-designed plates, a 6 can look like a “G” or an “S”. A 7 can be read as a “T” or even an “L”. And when put together, the number 67 can be read by some as an “R” – but only if you look really, really hard.

Iraqi Forces Break Through IS Defences In Tal Afar

Iraqi forces say they have broken through the defences of so-called Islamic State (IS) and reached the centre of the city of Tal Afar.

A spokesman said troops had also reached the neighbourhood around the old citadel.

Tal Afar, near the Syrian border, is one of the jihadists’ last remaining strongholds in Iraq after they were driven out of the city of Mosul.

The Iraqi offensive on Tal Afar has been under way for six days. It involves similar forces to those that finally recaptured Mosul, but also includes some units of a mainly Shia militia.

Elite units had seized the northern neighbourhoods of Nida, Taliaa, Uruba, Nasr and Saad, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said. The militants remain in control of the north-eastern quarter of the city, the JOC said.

Rock Concert Cancelled In Rotterdam Due To Terror Threat

Police have arrested a 22-year-old man in the southern Dutch province of Brabant, hours after a rock concert was cancelled because of an alert from Spanish police.

The man was detained in the early hours of Thursday as part of the inquiry into the terror threat, said police.

The alarm on Wednesday centred on a gig involving US band the Allah-Las, due to perform in Rotterdam’s Maassilo.

A Spanish van driver was detained close by but police said he was not involved. The reported tip-off from Spanish police came less than a week after the jihadist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils in which 15 people died.

More Than 56,000 Migrant Attempts Foiled By Border Force Police

Border Forces foiled an average of 153 attempts by migrants trying to get to the UK from France every day last year.

More than 56,000 attempts were made by people trying to get into Kent from French ports and terminals in 2016.

The government figures, released under freedom of information, are the second highest in seven years, despite dropping by 25,000 compared to 2015.

The Home Office said the decrease was a “success”. Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke said it was “shocking”. The statistics include people stowing away in vehicles at Calais and Dunkirk ports as well as Eurotunnel and Eurostar terminals.

They also showed the number of illegal immigrants who were found in UK ferry ports increased last year. There were 1,868 detected in 2016, compared with 1,305 in 2015.
