North Korea Test ICBM Missile

North Korea says it has successfully tested its first “intercontinental ballistic missile” (ICBM).

A state television announcement said the missile, which landed in the Sea of Japan on Tuesday, could hit targets anywhere in the world. But the US and Russia said the missile had a medium range and presented no threat to either country.

North Korea has increased the frequency of its missile tests, in defiance of a ban by the UN Security Council.
The announcement on North Korea state television said the Hwasong-14 missile test was overseen by leader Kim Jong-un. It said the projectile had reached an altitude of 2,802km (1,731 miles) and flew 933km for 39 minutes before hitting a target in the sea.

North Korea, it said, was now “a full-fledged nuclear power that has been possessed of the most powerful inter-continental ballistic rocket capable of hitting any part of the world”. It would enable the country to “put an end to the US nuclear war threat and blackmail” and defend the Korean peninsula, it said.

UK Border Force Seize Haul Of Guns

A haul of firearms has been seized in France from a car heading to the UK.

Seventy-nine “viable” weapons were recovered from the car’s trailer when it was stopped by UK Border Force officers at Coquelles near the Channel Tunnel terminal on Saturday.

Two men, a Polish and a Czech national, have been remanded in custody at Uxbridge magistrates’ court in connection with the operation. The guns were concealed in specially-adapted engine blocks.

The seizure follows a joint operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Metropolitan Police working with Border Force officials in France.

Graham Gardner, the NCA’s deputy director of investigations, said: “Our recent threat assessment highlights that handguns are still commonly favoured by some criminal groups in the UK. “They may not be the largest firearm, but they are easily concealable and lethal in the hands of anyone prepared to use them.”

Denis Kolencukov, 23, originally from the Czech Republic but living in the UK, and Polish national Janusz Michek, 59, are each charged with two firearms offences.
No further action will be taken against six other Polish nationals arrested in Coquelles.

Weapons Stolen From Portuguese Military

Days after weapons and explosives were taken from a military warehouse in Portugal, the scale of the theft is becoming clear.

A Spanish website has revealed an extensive list of grenades, ammunition and explosives seized from the Tancos site, north-east of Lisbon. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has called for a no-holds-barred investigation into the raid. Links to arms thefts in other Nato states should be looked at, he added. There was no mention of which other countries he had in mind.

The theft was discovered on 28 June and details were passed on to Portugal’s Nato allies. The burglary is thought to have taken place at night at a part of the security perimeter where closed-circuit cameras had been broken for over two years.

USS Stethem Sails In Waters Claimed By China

Beijing has called the presence of a US warship near a disputed island in the South China Sea “a serious political and military provocation”.

The USS Stethem sailed close to Triton Island, part of the Paracel Islands archipelago, claimed by China and others.

China responded by sending military vessels and fighter jets to the area. It happened hours before US President Donald Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping spoke on the phone.

During the call, Mr Xi told Mr Trump that “negative factors” were affecting US-China relations, according to a read-out of the call carried on Chinese state TV. A White House statement about their call did not say if they had discussed the incident. It said the leaders had instead “reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearised Korean peninsula”.

The US has repeatedly warned China against its occupation and aggressive reclamation of islands in disputed waters, but Beijing says it is within its sovereign rights to do so.
