Four Dead After Rioters Storm The Halls Of Congress In Washington
The US Congress has certified Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election, hours after Trump supporters stormed the building in an attack that saw four people die.
Lawmakers resumed the session after police managed to remove the mob, which had been encouraged by President Donald Trump in a bid to overturn his defeat. The certification clears the way for Mr Biden to be sworn in on 20 January.
In response, Mr Trump finally pledged an "orderly transition" of power.

Julian Assange Refused Bail After Wining Bid Against US Extradition
Julian Assange will remain in jail as he continues to fight against extradition to the USA.
District Judge Vanessa Baraitser said there were substantial grounds to believe he would abscond. On Monday, she ruled the Wikileaks founder cannot be extradited to the USA because he might kill himself. The USA is now appealing that decision - and had opposed releasing the 49-year-old from a maximum security prison before the case is heard.

Killer Of Three Sought 'Religious Jihad' At Reading Park
A man who stabbed three people to death in a Reading park believed he was carrying out "an act of religious jihad", a court has heard.
Khairi Saadallah, 26, stabbed to death James Furlong, 36, David Wails, 49, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett, 39, during the attack in Forbury Gardens in June.
As part of his sentencing, a hearing will decide if he was motivated by a religious or ideological cause. The prosecution claim the stabbing spree was a terror attack.
Saadallah has admitted three counts of murder and attempted murder, but denies he was motivated by an ideological cause.

Iran Resumes Uranium 20% Enrichment Violating Nuclear Deal
Iran says it has resumed enriching uranium to 20% purity, in its most significant breach yet of the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
Government spokesman Ali Rabiei told state media the process had started at the underground Fordo plant near Qom.
Enriched uranium can be used to make reactor fuel but also nuclear bombs. Weapons-grade uranium is 90% purity. Iran, which insists that its nuclear programme is peaceful, has rolled back a number of commitments under the deal.

Teen Stabbed To Death In Reading
Four boys and a girl have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder after a 13-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Reading.
Officers were called just before 16:00 GMT on Sunday following reports of an attack in Bugs Bottom fields, Emmer Green. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
The five teenagers, all aged 13 or 14, remain in police custody.
Thames Valley Police said the boy's next of kin had been informed, but no formal identification had taken place.

Three Police Officers Shot Dead In Central France
A gunman has shot dead three police officers who were called to a domestic violence incident in central France.
The suspect, 48, said to be known to authorities on child custody issues, was later found dead, officials said.
A woman had fled to the roof of a house in a remote village near Saint-Just in the early hours of Wednesday. The gunman killed one officer and wounded another. He then set fire to the house and killed two more officers who arrived. The woman was rescued.
President Emmanuel Macron said the nation shared the grief of the families of the police officers.

Navalny Dupes Russian Agent Into Confessing Poision Plot
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny duped a Russian FSB state agent into revealing details of an attack on him with the nerve agent Novichok, the investigative group Bellingcat reports.
Mr Navalny reportedly impersonated a security official to call the agent. The agent, Konstantin Kudryavtsev, told him the Novichok had been placed in a pair of Mr Navalny's underpants.
Mr Navalny, who is still recovering in Berlin, posted a recording of the long conversation on his YouTube channel. He collapsed on board a Russian airliner in August in the attack, which nearly proved fatal.

Former Mexican Governor Shot Dead In Puerto Vallarta Restaurant
Security has been reinforced in the popular Mexican beach resort of Puerto Vallarta after a former governor of the state of Jalisco was killed on Friday.
Aristóteles Sandoval, 46, was shot in the back as he went to the bathroom at a restaurant in the city. One of his bodyguards was also shot and injured. Mr Sandoval, who governed Jalisco from 2013 to 2018, died in hospital.
The killing is one of the most high-profile attacks on a Mexican politician in recent years.

Australian Couple's Death Treated As Terrorism By Police
The death of an elderly couple at their home in Australia is being treated as terrorism, detectives have said.
The bodies of Maurice Anthill, 87, and his 86-year-old wife Zoe, were found at their home in Brisbane on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, 22-year-old Raghe Abdi was shot dead by police on a highway on the outskirts of the city after threatening officers with a knife.
Detectives have not yet confirmed how the Anthill's died but say officers found evidence that Abdi had been in their home.

Top US General Meets With Taliban On Peace Talks
America's most senior general met Taliban peace negotiators on Tuesday to urge a reduction in violence, the US military said.
Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, met negotiators in Doha, Qatar, before flying to Kabul to meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. The Taliban and the Afghan government are holding peace talks in Doha.
Senior US officials have warned publicly that an increase in Taliban violence is endangering the talks. The US is drastically reducing the number of its troops in the country ahead of the end of the Trump administration in January.
