• Four Bombings In Syria Leave Dozens Dead

    At least 40 people have been killed in four bombings in government-held areas of Syria and one in a city dominated by Kurdish forces, state media report.

    The attacks took place between 08:00 and 09:00 (05:00-06:00 GMT) around Damascus, Homs, Tartous and Hassakeh. It was not clear if they were linked. The deadliest incident was outside Tartous, on the Mediterranean coast.

    Tartous, which hosts a Russian naval base, is the heartland of President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite sect.

  • Charge Of Terror Offences For Royal Marine

    A Royal Marine from Northern Ireland has been charged with terror offences and has arrived at Westminster Magistrates Court.

    Ciarán Maxwell has been charged with one offence of terrorism, one of fraud and one of possessing cannabis. He was arrested in Somerset last week after searches in Larne and Devon.

    The 30-year-old's arrest was understood to be connected to the discovery of two arms dumps in County Antrim earlier this year. He is charged with manufacturing explosives, making devices and storing them in barrels in hides in England and Northern Ireland.

  • President Karimov Of Uzbek Has Died, Turkey Says

    Uzbek President Islam Karimov, one of Asia's most authoritarian leaders, has died, Turkey says - despite no official Uzbek confirmation.

    Mr Karimov, 78 and in power since 1989, was taken to hospital last week after a brain haemorrhage but the government has only said he is critically ill.

    On Friday, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told a televised meeting Mr Karimov had died. Uzbek state TV channels have dropped light entertainment programmes.

  • South Korea Claims A North Korean Minister Has Been Executed

    South Korean government officials have said that North Korea executed one of its highest ranking ministers last month.

    Seoul's unification ministry said Kim Yong-jin was one of Pyongyang's vice premiers and in charge of education. Officials did not explain how they got the information. Seoul's record on reporting such developments is patchy.

    In May, a North Korean military chief said to have been executed was found to be alive and attending official events.

  • IS Chief Strategist Killed In Syria

    The chief strategist of the Islamic State group, whose calls for attacks against the West during Ramadan led to mass bloodshed, has been killed in Syria, IS-affiliated media say.

    The Amaq news agency said Abu Muhammad al-Adnani died in Aleppo province. The Pentagon said an air strike had targeted Adnani in the town of al Bab and the results were being assessed.

    Reports of his death come as IS is suffering a series of military reverses in both Syria and Iraq.

  • Suicide Bomber Targets Chinese Embassy In Kyrgyzstan

    A car driven by a suicide bomber has exploded after ramming the gates of the Chinese embassy in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, officials say.

    The suicide bomber died and three embassy employees, all Kyrgyz nationals, were injured, Deputy PM Zhenish Razakov said.

    China's foreign ministry condemned the bombing as an "extreme and violent attack". No-one has yet said they were behind the suicide bombing.

  • US Says Turkey Fighting In Northern Syria Must Stop

    The US says fighting between Turkey, pro-Turkish rebels and Kurdish-aligned forces in northern Syria is "unacceptable" and must stop.

    Clashes in places where so-called Islamic State (IS) was not present were a "source of deep concern", the US envoy to the anti-IS coalition tweeted.

    Turkish forces have attacked what they say are Kurdish "terrorists" since crossing the border last week. But the Kurdish YPG militia says Turkey just wants to occupy Syrian territory.

  • Man Who Tried To Save Backpacker In Australia Dies

    A British man who was injured trying to save a fellow backpacker as she was stabbed to death in Australia has died, Queensland Police has said.

    Thomas Jackson, 30, of Congleton, Cheshire, was injured when he tried to help Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, in the attack at a hostel last week. Frenchman Smail Ayad, 29, has been charged with murdering Ms Ayliffe-Chung and attempting to murder Mr Jackson. Police said this charge would be changed to murder.

  • An Assassination Bid On Angela Merkel Has Been Foiled In Prague

    A feared assassination attempt on German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reportedly been foiled in Prague.

    Czech police halted an armed man in his car as he allegedly tried to join Merkel’s motorcade during her visit to the capital.

    Local reports claim that officers found a baton, a canister of tear gas, cement blocks, and handcuffs in the man’s black 4x4 Mercedes.

    A video posted on the Blesk news website shows several officers around a police car talking to the middle-aged man.

    " The perpetrator has been detained,” police spokesman Josef Bocan said.

  • 11 Policemen Killed As Car Bomb Hits Turkish Policequarters

    A car bomb has hit police headquarters in Cizre, south-east Turkey, killing 11 policemen and injuring 78.

    The huge explosion at 07:00 (04:00 GMT) targeted a checkpoint, and left the nearby riot police HQ in ruins.

    Prime Minister Binali Yildirim blamed the banned Kurdistan Workers Party, PKK, and vowed to give the "vile attackers the answer they deserve". Cizre has been the subject of several curfews in the past few months by Turkish authorities fighting the PKK.
