• School Attack In Finland Leaves 10 Wounded And 1 Dead

    One person has died and 10 have been wounded in a violent attack at a vocational college in the Finnish city of Kuopio, police say.

    Police said the suspect was carrying a "bladed weapon" and a gun. They said they used a firearm when they arrived at the school, which is in a shopping centre south of the centre of Kuopio.

    Another witness told local radio that armed police had confronted the suspect and two shots had been fired.

    The suspect, who police say is Finnish man, was among those wounded in the attack. Two are described as in a serious condition.

  • Al-Shabab Attack Military Base Used By US

    Jihadists have attacked a military base where US soldiers train commandos in Somalia.

    Local residents reported heavy blasts and gunfire at Baledogle airport in the southern Lower Shabelle region. The al-Shabab militant group said it had carried out the attack, using a car bomb to blast through the gates before sending its fighters inside.

    Military officials say the jihadists were repulsed without breaching the perimeter fence. No casualties were reported among the Somali military.

  • Nearly 500 Rescued By Nigerian Police After Being Tortured

    Nigerian police say they have rescued nearly 500 people from a building in the northern city of Kaduna where they were detained and allegedly tortured.

    Those held were all men and boys - some were found chained up.

    Kaduna state's police chief Ali Janga said the large house was raided following a tip-off about suspicious activity. He said it was a "house of torture" and described it as a case involving human slavery.

    The detainees, not all Nigerian, said they had been tortured, sexually abused, starved and prevented from leaving - in some cases for several years.

  • Report Shows Cleveland Police Force Are Failing

    A scandal-hit police force's catalogue of failings has been "putting the public at risk", a watchdog has said.

    Cleveland Police has been "operating without a clear plan or direction", HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services said in a report. It is the first force in England or Wales to be rated inadequate across all areas, the inspectorate said.

    Recently appointed Chief Constable Richard Lewis admitted Cleveland Police was "letting people down".

  • Riot Police Bring Worcestershire Prison Under Control

    A disturbance involving inmates at a high-security jail has been brought under control after riot-trained officers were sent in.

    Staff at HMP Long Lartin were forced to retreat from a wing when they were attacked with pool balls.

    About 10 inmates were involved in Tuesday evening's disturbance, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said.

    One officer required hospital treatment after being indirectly injured, and part of the building was damaged. A specialist unit of prison officers, known as a Tornado Team, were sent to the Category A prison in an attempt to restore order.

  • Man Arrested After Driving At Two Police Officers

    A driver has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two police officers and another man were hit by a car in West Sussex.

    The police officers were carrying out a routine drugs check at the side of the A259 in Littlehampton at about 01:05 BST when they were struck.

    A Mercedes-Benz which was driving at speed hit the officers and the man they were with.

  • Foreign Terrorists Detected By Interpol Crossing The Mediterranean

    Interpol says it has detected more than a dozen suspected "foreign terrorist fighters" crossing the Mediterranean Sea during a six-week operation.

    The international police organisation carried out more than 1.2 million searches at ports in six countries between 24 July and 8 September.

    Operation Neptune II focussed on busy tourist routes between North Africa and southern Europe. It resulted in 31 active investigative leads, Interpol says.

    US gun manufacturer Colt has said it will suspend the production of sporting rifles for consumers.

    Those include the AR-15, a semi-automatic rifle that has been used in several recent US mass shootings.

    Colt says it remains committed to the right to bear arms, but that the US market is already saturated with similar weapons. It will focus instead on fulfilling contracts for customers in the military and police, it added.

  • Irish Businessman Kidnapped And Beaten

    A prominent businessman has been abducted in County Fermanagh before being beaten and left at the side of a road in the Republic of Ireland.

    Kevin Lunney, 50, a director of Quinn Industrial Holdings, was driving from work to his home in Kinawley when he was attacked at 18:40 BST on Tuesday. He was found 22 miles (35km) away beside a road in County Cavan at about 21:00 and taken to hospital.

  • Former Marine Claims FSB Officer 'Set Him Up' On Spy Charge

    Former US marine Paul Whelan, accused in Russia of espionage, has said he is not a spy and that he was set up by a Russian friend.

    Mr Whelan, who is also a citizen of the UK, Canada and Ireland, said a friend had planted a hard drive on him without his knowledge. The 48-year-old's appeal against detention was denied by a Moscow court.

    Prosecutors say he was caught "red-handed" with state secrets last year. The investigation has now ended, and Mr Whelan's lawyers have begun studying the evidence.
