• Eleven Arrests After Fatal Stabbing Near Euston Street Station

    Eleven people have been arrested after a man was stabbed several times in the street in London and collapsed and died in a hotel reception.

    The victim entered the Wesley Hotel on Euston Street, near London's Euston Station, at about 22:45 GMT on Monday. The man was helped by hotel staff, who contacted the emergency services, but he died shortly after 23:30.

    Police said the 11 people held had all been arrested on suspicion of murder and were in custody.

  • MI6 Head Warns Of IS Attacks

    The head of MI6 has warned that the Islamic State group is reorganising for more attacks despite its military defeat in Syria.

    Alex Younger, the UK's intelligence chief, also told of his concern about jihadists returning to Europe with "dangerous" skills and connections. They should expect to be investigated and possibly prosecuted, he said.

  • IS Bride Wants To Return To UK To Give Birth

    A British woman who ran away to Syria as a schoolgirl to join the Islamic State group has been told she could face prosecution if she returns home.

    Speaking from a Syrian refugee camp, Shamima Begum, now 19, told the Times newspaper she had no regrets but wanted to come back to the UK as she was nine months pregnant.

    In Syria, she married an IS fighter and had two children, who have both died. Security minister Ben Wallace said she would be investigated if she came back.

  • Australian PM Wants To Re-Open Christmas Island Detention Centre

    Australian PM Scott Morrison says he will re-open a controversial detention centre on Christmas Island, after a historic defeat in parliament.

    On Tuesday, non-government MPs secured enough votes to pass a bill making it easier for sick refugees held offshore to be treated in the country.

    Mr Morrison said the law would weaken the nation's tough border policies and embolden human traffickers. Opponents accused him of spreading fear before an impending election.

  • Syrian Asylum Seekers Arrested On Torture Charges

    Germany says it has arrested two former Syrian intelligence officers alleged to have been involved in torturing critics of President Bashar al-Assad.

    Both men seem to have sought asylum in Germany after leaving Syria a few years before the migrant influx in 2015.

    One them, Anwar R, is suspected of committing crimes against humanity. He was allegedly in charge of a General Security Directorate (GSD) prison where at least 2,000 people were tortured between April 2011 and September 2012.

    The other man, Eyad A, is suspected of aiding and abetting a crime against humanity at the same prison.

  • Drone Squadrons Could Be In Operation By The End Of 2019

    "Swarm squadrons" of drones are to be deployed by British armed forces to overwhelm enemy air defences, the defence secretary has said.

    Gavin Williamson said the specially-adapted drones could be in operation by the end of 2019. He also warned in a speech that the UK needs a bolder and stronger armed forces prepared to use "hard power".

    Labour has said the military's role on the international stage had been "completely undermined" by Tory cuts.

    Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute, Mr Williamson said Britain must stand up to those who "flout international law".

  • ONS Reports Knife Crime Is At Its Highest Since 1946

    The number of fatal stabbings in England and Wales last year was the highest since records began in 1946, official figures show.

    There were 285 killings by a knife or sharp instrument in the 12 months ending March 2018, Office for National Statistics analysis shows.

    The ONS says one in four (71) of all victims (285) were men aged 18-24.

    The figures also show 25% of victims were black - the highest proportion since data was first collected in 1997. The figures show a 45% increase in the number of victims aged 16-24 and a 23% increase in those aged 25-34.

  • Former Crime Boss Pays £50,000 To Avoid Prison

    The former head of a notorious crime gang paid nearly £50,000 in court costs to avoid going to prison - hours after claiming he was broke.

    Terry Adams, 64, who was associated with the north London "Adams family", initially pleaded poverty and offered to pay back what he owed at £15 a week. At this point the judge ordered him to serve the "default term" of 12 months.

    The Judicial Office said within three hours of the hearing Adams had paid up the £46,258 he owed in costs.

  • Man Making Threats To Labour MP Arrested

    A man has been arrested by police investigating threats made to Labour MP Yvette Cooper.

    The 59-year-old Leeds man was arrested in Castleford on Friday over alleged threats to the Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford MP.

    West Yorkshire Police said the man was held "as a result of information received in relation to alleged threats against a serving MP". He was bailed pending advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, police said.

  • Russia Pulls Out Of INF Treaty

    Russia has suspended its involvement in the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) following a similar decision by the US.

    President Vladimir Putin said Russia would start developing new missiles.

    On Friday, the US, which has long accused Russia of violating the treaty, formally announced it was suspending its obligations under the agreement.
