• France Cracks Down On Dozens Of Mosques Suspected Of Separatism

    The French authorities have launched inspections of dozens of mosques and prayer halls suspected of links to Islamist extremism.

    Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the crackdown, saying some could be closed if found to be encouraging "separatism".

    It comes a week before the unveiling of a new law to combat such extremism. It is a response to attacks in October, blamed on Islamists, including the beheading of teacher Samuel Paty.

  • Russia Detains Suspected 'Volga Maniac' Serial Killer

    Russian investigators have arrested a man they suspect of having robbed and murdered 26 elderly women across central Russia between 2011 and 2012.

    The suspect, named as 38-year-old Radik Tagirov, is a locksmith with a previous conviction for theft, police said. He is suspected of being the so-called "Volga maniac", who is linked to numerous crimes and killings committed in regions along Russia's Volga River.

    There has not yet been any comment from - or on behalf of - Mr Tagirov.

    On Tuesday, police said the suspect was being questioned and was providing information relating to their inquiries.

  • Woman Stabbed In The Neck & Another Injured By Knifeman At Burnley M&S

    Two women have been seriously injured in a stabbing at a Marks & Spencer store, police have said.

    Officers were called following reports of an attack inside the store in St James Street, Burnley, Lancashire, at 09:30 GMT. Both women have been taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

    A 57-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

  • Two Killed And Fifteen Injured After Car Ploughs Into Pedestrians In Germany

    At least two people have been killed and several others injured after a car ploughed through a pedestrian area of the western German city of Trier, officials say.

    Police say the driver, a 51-year-old from the region, has been arrested. The city's mayor described the scene as "horrible" and said the victims included a girl.

    The circumstances of the incident are still not clear. Police have told people to avoid the area.

  • Iranian Nuclear Scientist Assassinated

    Iran's most senior nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh has been assassinated near the capital Tehran, the country's defence ministry has confirmed.

    Fakhrizadeh died in hospital after being attacked in Damavand county.

    Iranian news agencies said assailants targeted his car with a bomb before shooting at him. Western intelligence agencies view him as the mastermind behind Iran's secret nuclear weapons programme. He was reportedly been described as the "father of the Iranian bomb" by diplomats.

  • Turkish Court Jails More Than 300 People For Life Over Failed Coup

    A court in Turkey has given life sentences to 337 military officers and others, in one of the biggest trials linked to the 2016 coup attempt.

    Mr Erdogan says US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen masterminded the plot, which led to mass arrests.

    Mr Gulen has denied any involvement in the attempted coup in July 2016 that killed 251 people and injured more than 2,000. Mr Erdogan was on vacation at the time at a resort.

    Thousands of civilians rallied in support of Mr Erdogan in a night of turmoil, confronting rogue soldiers and preventing the plotters from seizing power.

  • Russia Chases Off US Ship In The Sea Of Japan

    Russia says one of its warships caught and chased off a US Navy destroyer after it entered territorial waters in the Sea of Japan on Tuesday.

    Moscow accused the USS John S McCain of travelling 2km (1.2 miles) across its maritime border in Peter the Great Gulf and says it threatened to ram the ship.

    The US warship then left the area, according to Russia.

    However, the US Navy denied any wrongdoing and said its ship had not been "expelled". The incident took place on Tuesday in the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, a body of water bordered by Japan, Russia and the Koreas.

  • Apple Security Head Charged With Bribery For Gun Licences

    Apple's head of global security has been charged with bribery.

    Thomas Moyer is accused of offering bribes in the form of iPads worth $70,000 in order to obtain concealed firearms licenses. The charges were brought by a California grand jury on Monday. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

    Two police officers from Santa Clara County, California, have also been charged. County Undersheriff Rick Sung and Sheriff's Captain James Jenson are accused of requesting bribes for concealed firearms licenses.

    Mr Moyer is accused of offering bribes to get them.

  • Lebanese Prisoners Killed In Car crash

    Five prisoners have died when their getaway car hit a tree after a mass jail-break in Lebanon.

    A total of 69 prisoners managed to break down their cell doors at the jail near Beirut in the early hours. Fifteen prisoners were caught, state news agency NNA said. One was returned by his mother.

    The security forces have been conducting a search of the area, and local people have been warned to be on the alert.

    The deadly accident happened when six prisoners seized a vehicle upon fleeing the facility in Baabda district.
