Russia Accuses UK Of Creating A Fake Story Over Poisoning
Russia has accused the UK of inventing a "fake story" and "playing with fire" over the Salisbury spy poisoning.
At a UN Security Council meeting, Moscow's UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzia said Britain's main goal had been "to discredit and even delegitimise" Russia with "unsubstantiated accusations"
The UK says Russia is behind the attack but Moscow denies responsibility. Britain's UN representative Karen Pierce said the UK's actions "stand up to any scrutiny". She likened Moscow's requests to take part in the investigation to an arsonist investigating his own fire.

Man Bailed After Burglary Death
A 78-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder after a suspected burglar was stabbed to death has been bailed.
The man, named locally as Richard Osborn-Brooks, found two intruders in South Park Crescent, Hither Green, south-east London, early on Wednesday.
A 37-year-old man, armed with a screwdriver, forced the homeowner into his kitchen where a struggle ensued and the suspect was stabbed, the Met said.
Mr Osborn-Brooks has been bailed until May pending further inquiries.

Eastern European Gangs Behind London Violence According To Labour MP
Drug gangs controlled by Eastern European criminals are fuelling the rising tide of violent crime in London, a Labour MP has claimed.
Tottenham MP David Lammy said drugs were as "prolific as ordering a pizza", comparing the situation to McMafia, a BBC drama about Russian gangsters. The MP said political leaders were doing nothing about it.
The Metropolitan Police is now investigating more than 50 suspected murders this year. Police patrols have been stepped up and officers are using stop-and-search powers to seize weapons after the increase in violence.

Two Arrested In West Yorkshire On Terror Charges
Two men have been arrested in West Yorkshire on suspicion of being involved in a terror plot.
The pair, aged 52 and 21, from Dewsbury, are accused of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
Two residential addresses in the Savile Town area are being searched by counter-terror officers.
West Yorkshire Police said both men are being questioned at a local station.

London Teenager Killed In Drive By Shooting
Two shootings in London in the space of an hour have left a 17-year-old girl dead and a boy, 16, critically ill.
Friends said the girl, named locally as Tanesha, was shot from a car "for no reason at all" in Tottenham on Monday night. Grieving family members and friends left floral tributes and candles at the scene in Chalgrove Road on Tuesday.
Two miles away, in Walthamstow, the boy was found with gunshot wounds, with another boy, 15, who had stab injuries. Both attacks come amid concerns over rising violent crime in London. Police say the shootings are not linked.

Russian Foreign Minister Accuses The West Of 'Playing Games'
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the UK and Western partners of playing "children's games" in their response to the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.
He accused countries of "disregarding all accepted behaviour" and resorting to "open lies and disinformation".
Twenty-nine nations have expelled diplomats over the poisoning, which the UK holds Russia responsible for.

Murder In London On The Increase
A spike in violent crime in London saw more murders committed in the city in February and March than there were in New York, figures show.
So far in 2018, the Met Police has investigated 46 murders, compared with 50 in the US city. But, while New York's murder rate decreased from the end of January, London's rose markedly from that point.
Ex-Met Police Ch Supt Leroy Logan says it is proof that "London's violent traits have become a virus".

Driver Detained After Almost Hitting French Soldiers
Police have detained two people after a group of soldiers was almost hit by a car while they were jogging near their barracks in south-eastern France.
Soldiers of the 7th Mountain Battalion managed to avoid the oncoming vehicle in Varces-Allières-et-Risset.
The driver shouted in Arabic at the soldiers before the attack, and sped off afterwards in what reports said was a Peugeot 208 with fake number plates. Reports suggest a woman was also in the car. No-one was harmed.

National Memorial Service Held For French Police Officer
Tributes have been paid across France to the police officer who died after he offered himself in exchange for a hostage in an Islamist attack.
The coffin carrying Lt Col Arnaud Beltrame was driven in heavy rain through Paris, where hundreds of people joined a national memorial service.
President Emmanuel Macron said the officer, who was 44, symbolised the "French spirit of resistance". Three other people were also killed in Friday's attacks in southern France.

National Security Strategy In Review After Skripal Attack
Threats from Russia and organised crime are the focus of a new national security strategy for the UK.
In what the prime minister has called a "fusion doctrine", the plan will combine intelligence and the Army with economics and diplomacy to defeat UK enemies.
Theresa May said "every capability" would be used against increasing threats on national security. The review was completed before the Salisbury attack on a Russian ex-spy.
