• WWII French Resistance Fighter Dies At 101

    The last member of an immigrant group who fought the Nazis for the French Resistance has died aged 101.

    Arsène Tchakarian escaped a Nazi crackdown in which 22 of the group's fighters were shot by the German occupation forces in Paris in 1944. He was awarded France's highest honour.

    President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that Tchakarian, an ethnic Armenian, was "a hero of the Resistance and tireless witness whose voice resonated strongly to the very end".

    Tchakarian only became a French citizen in 1958. He was granted several medals for gallantry, including the prestigious Legion of Honour in 2012.

  • Samurai Sword Attacker Jailed

    A man who attacked an ice cream van and threatened its owner with a Samurai sword in front of "screaming" children has been jailed.

    Jamie Tickle was drunk and high on cocaine when he climbed into the van and waved the sword as a woman was serving three children on 1 July. He then hid by bins but was arrested shortly after the attack in Merseyside.

    Tickle was jailed for two years and eight months at Liverpool Crown Court for affray and possession of a weapon.

  • London Drill Rapper Stabbed To Death

    A rapper in London's drill music scene, who was cleared of murder earlier this year, has been stabbed to death.

    Three men were found with stab wounds on Warham Street, Camberwell, at 19:20 BST on Wednesday.

    Victim Siddique Kamara, also known as Incognito and SK, was cleared at the Old Bailey in January of murdering Abdirahman Mohamed. Two men are in custody on suspicion of murder. The Met said "one line of inquiry is this being gang-related".

  • neo-Nazi Freed After Court Rules Insufficient Evidence In Dusseldorf Bombing

    A man accused of bombing a Düsseldorf train station in July 2000, targeting Jewish immigrants, has been acquitted.

    A court ruled there was insufficient evidence to convict the man, an alleged neo-Nazi, who was charged with 12 counts of attempted murder.

    The pipe bomb badly injured 10 of the 12 people, including a pregnant woman who lost her child and one of her feet.

    Ahead of the verdict, prosecutors said an acquittal would be "the most serious legal error" in Düsseldorf's history.

  • Three Journalists Killed In Central African Republic

    Three journalists, believed to be Russians, have been killed in an ambush in the Central African Republic (CAR).

    The Russian foreign ministry said it was in contact with local authorities to establish their identities. The bodies were reportedly found on a road near the central town of Sibut.

    It is unclear who was behind the attack, but many militia groups are active in the CAR. The country has witnessed ethnic and religious conflict since a rebel uprising in 2013.

    North Korea appears to be building new ballistic missiles despite recent warming ties with the Trump administration and pledges to denuclearise, reports say.

    Unnamed US officials told the Washington Post that spy satellites had spotted continuing activity at a site that has produced ballistic missiles.

    Reuters quotes an official as saying it is unclear how far the work has gone.

    Donald Trump met North Korea's Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June.

    Handcuffed and helpless, Yevgeny Makarov is held face down on a desk as more than a dozen prison officers take it in turn to beat him.

    They punch the soles of his feet first, then thrash them with truncheons. This is no frenzied, spontaneous attack. The methods are calculated to cause maximum pain. The guards have to rest, exhausted, between beatings.

    The assault took place more than a year ago at Prison Number One in Yaroslavl, 272km (169 miles) north of Moscow.

    The victim's complaint was rejected at the time; an investigator concluded staff had used "appropriate" force.

  • Police Car Chase Ends In Fatality

    A 20-year-old woman died and six people were injured when a suspected stolen car, being pursued by police, crashed with another car in Birmingham.

    The woman was in a VW Golf that was in collision with an Audi A3 being chased by officers in Kingstanding on Sunday.

    She died at the scene and the male driver in the car was seriously hurt.

  • North Korea Returns US Troops Remains

    North Korea has returned remains believed to be of 55 US troops killed during the Korean War, bringing renewed hope to families who have waited decades for closure.

    The return of the remains, brought to a US base in South Korea, is the latest move in the cautious diplomacy between Washington and Pyongyang.

    The repatriation was agreed at the June summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong-un. It is hoped more will follow.

    "It's hard to live your life not knowing what happened to your loved one," the daughter of one missing serviceman said ahead of Friday's news.

  • Shots Fired During East London Car Chase With Police

    Shots were fired at armed police from a car during a chase through the streets of east London.

    Officers responded to reports of people armed with a gun in Lascelles Close, Leytonstone, at about 22:45 BST on Thursday.

    Shortly after a car failed to stop for officers who set off in pursuit.

    Scotland Yard said "a number of shots were fired towards officers" and police also opened fire. Three people have been arrested.
