    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a US citizen was killed and five other people were injured in a knife attack in central London.

    Police believe the attack in Russell Square on Wednesday was "spontaneous", with victims "selected at random". The woman who died was thought to be in her 60s. The injured people were from Britain, America, Israel and Australia.

  • Bradford Woman Victim Of Honour Killing

    A woman who was the victim of a so-called honour killing in Pakistan, according to her husband, had been strangled, police say.

    Samia Shahid, 28, from Bradford, died last month in Northern Punjab.

    Deputy Inspector General Abu Bakr Khuda Bux revealed to the BBC how she died, following the launch of a murder inquiry based on information they got from her husband, Syed Mukhtar Kazam.

    No arrests have been made in the case, he confirmed. However, Ms Shahid's father Mohammad and a cousin known as Mobeen have both been interviewed by officers, but neither have been detained.

  • UK & Coalition Forces Bomb IS Training Centre

    A palace built by Saddam Hussein which was being used as a training centre for the Islamic State militant group has been bombed by UK and coalition forces.

    The Ministry of Defence said the former dictator's complex in Mosul, north Iraq, was a "major" IS HQ and training centre for foreign recruits. RAF Tornados used guided bombs in what Defence Secretary Michael Fallon called "emphatic" airstrikes on Monday.

    Mosul, Iraq's second city, has been under IS control since June 2014. The UK is part of a US-led international coalition conducting airstrikes on IS targets in Syria and Iraq.

  • Second UK Soldier Dies In Syria Fighting IS

    A British man has reportedly died fighting with Kurdish forces against so-called Islamic State in Syria.

    Dean Carl Evans, 22, from Reading, died on 21 July during fighting in the city of Manbij, Kurdish reports suggest. His father, John, posted a statement on social media confirming the death and added: "He was loved and will be missed by all his family and friends".

    The Foreign Office is looking into reports of the death - the second involving a Briton fighting against IS.

  • US Strikes IS Stronghold In Libya

    The United States has carried out air strikes on positions of so-called Islamic State (IS) in Libya, following a request by the UN-backed government there, the Pentagon says.

    The strikes targeted positions in the port city of Sirte, an IS stronghold.

    Libyan PM Fayez Sarraj, in a televised address, said the strikes caused "heavy losses". Western powers have become increasingly concerned at IS's growing presence in Libya. The air strikes are the first such US military intervention co-ordinated with the Libyan unity government.

  • Ecclestone's Mother In Law Kidnapped By His Pilot

    Police have arrested one of Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone's helicopter pilots on suspicion of involvement in the kidnapping of Mr Ecclestone's mother-in-law.

    Aparecida Schunck, 67, the mother of Mr Ecclestone's wife Fabiana Flosi, was abducted from her home in Sao Paulo on 22 July, but was rescued on Saturday.

    A $36.5m (£28m) ransom was demanded for her release but none was paid.

    Pilot Jorge Eurico da Silva Faria is one of three people seized by police. Mr Silva Faria is the alleged mastermind of the attack.

  • Five Russians Killed In Helicopter Crash Over Northern Syria

    Five Russians on board a military helicopter were killed when it was shot down by rebels in northern Syria, Russia has said.

    The Mi-8 transporter came down in Idlib province. It was carrying three crew and two officers, Russia's defence ministry said. The helicopter was returning from delivering humanitarian aid to the besieged city of Aleppo, it said. It is not clear which group brought the helicopter down.

    An alliance of rebel groups, including hardline jihadist factions, is the dominant power in Idlib.

  • London Tube Attacker Jailed For Life

    A man who attacked Tube passengers with a knife in London and tried to behead one of them has been jailed for life.

    Muhiddin Mire, 30, targeted people at random during the attack inspired by so-called Islamic State at Leytonstone station on 5 December. He grabbed musician Lyle Zimmerman, 56, and attempted to murder him in the ticket hall by cutting his throat.

  • Dalit Couple Murdered By Grocer Over Biscuit Debt

    A man from India's Dalit community has been beheaded and his wife hacked to death after a row over a 15 rupees (22 cents; 16 pence) debt in Uttar Pradesh state.

    Police said the couple were murdered by an upper caste grocer on Thursday when they told him they needed time to pay for biscuits they had bought from him. The grocer has been arrested.

    Dalits, formerly known as untouchables, form the lowest rung of India's caste hierarchy.

  • Boko Haram Ambushes UN Humanitarian Aid Convoy

    Suspected Islamist Boko Haram militants have ambushed a UN humanitarian aid convoy in north-eastern Nigeria which had a military escort, officials say.

    The military said three civilians, including UN staff, and two soldiers were wounded in the attack.

    It has prompted the UN to temporarily suspend aid deliveries in Borno state, where more than two million people have been displaced by the insurgency.

    The UN says thousands of children are severely malnourished in the region.
