    The deadly attack at a Pittsburgh synagogue will "not break us", religious leaders said, after the shooting of 11 people.

    Rabbi Jonathan Perlman, who helped hide people during Saturday's shooting, said: "What happened yesterday will not break us. It will not ruin us." The rabbi, along with other congregation leaders, spoke at an interfaith memorial service on Sunday.

    The suspected gunman, Robert Bowers, is due to appear in court later on Monday.

    Three suspicious packages have been found in the US, two addressed to a top Democrat and one to a former senior intelligence official, US media say.

    Two items were found in a search of a Florida mail facility, and another at a Manhattan post office. Top Democrat Cory Booker and former national intelligence chief James Clapper were targeted.

    The news came after several mail bombs were sent to prominent critics of US President Donald Trump.

    The FBI has been searching the Florida facility for evidence. Ex-President Barack Obama and actor Robert de Niro were among those targeted.

  • President Trump Invites Putin To US

    President Donald Trump has invited his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to visit Washington next year, US National Security Adviser John Bolton says.

    It is unclear if Mr Putin has accepted the invitation.

    The two leaders have met several times on the sidelines of international meetings but have held only one bilateral summit, in Helsinki in July. They are expected to meet briefly in Paris next month to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

    The invitation comes amid strained relations between the two countries.

    A suspect package similar to those sent to senior public figures has been sent to a New York restaurant owned by the actor Robert De Niro, US media say.

    The device arrived at the Tribeca Grill in Manhattan early on Thursday local time, US media said, citing police.

    Former Vice-President Joe Biden has also reportedly received packages. If linked to previous incidents, this would be the ninth perceived critic of President Donald Trump to receive a suspected explosive device this week.

    Women will be able to apply for any role in the military for the first time, the defence secretary has said.

    Gavin Williamson announced that women already serving in the Army are now able to transfer into infantry roles, including the special forces. He said for the first time the "armed forces will be determined by ability alone and not gender".

    A ban on women serving in close combat units in the British military was lifted in 2016.

    The Royal Armoured Corps was the first ground close combat branch to open its doors to women in November 2016.

    Suspected explosive devices were sent to former US President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the US Secret Service has said.

    It comes two days after a bomb was found at the home of liberal philanthropist and financier George Soros in the suburbs of New York City. The devices were discovered by technicians who screen mail sent to the former US officials.

    The Time Warner building in New York was also evacuated due to a package.

    CNN, which is located in the Time Warner building, evacuated its newsroom over the incident, CNN president Jeff Zucker confirmed in a statement.

    New York police say they have safely destroyed a suspected letter bomb found at the home of billionaire businessman George Soros in New York state.

    The package was discovered in a post box by an employee of Mr Soros who alerted the authorities before taking it to a nearby wooded area, police say.

    The incident on Monday afternoon is now being investigated by the FBI.

    Mr Soros has become a frequent target for criticism by right-wing groups due to his support for liberal causes. He was not at his home in the town of Bedford in Westchester County at the time of the incident, according to reports.

  • Radical Cleric Released From Prison 'On Licence'

    Radical preacher Anjem Choudary, jailed for inviting support for the Islamic State group, has been released.

    The cleric was sentenced in 2016 to five and a half years in prison. He led an extremist network linked to violent jihadists, including one of the killers of soldier Lee Rigby in 2013.

    Choudary, 51, has served less than half of his sentence and will complete the rest under strict supervision. Up to 25 measures to control him have been prepared. His release from prison comes approximately four months early because of time spent bailed on an electronic tag before his conviction.
