• Violent Protests In France Continue Over The Weekend

    French President Emmanuel Macron is meeting trade unions and employers' organisations, in a bid to defuse weeks of unrest in Paris and other cities.

    Monday's meeting comes ahead of a TV address in which he is expected to announce measures in response.

    France has seen four weekends of violent protests against fuel tax rises, living costs and other issues.

    About 136,000 "yellow-vest" protesters took to the streets on Saturday. More than 1,200 were taken into custody.

  • Typhoon Jets Launched Due To Unidentified Aircraft

    Fighter jets scrambled from a Scottish RAF station due to unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace.

    Typhoon jets from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray were called out on Monday morning.

    The RAF said the fighters were scrambled as a "precautionary measure", but no intercept took place and the Typhoons returned to base.

    They launched from RAF Lossiemouth with the Meteor air-to-air missile for the first time.

    A teenager who sent thousands of hoax bomb threats to schools and triggered an American airline security scare has been jailed for three years.

    George Duke-Cohan, 19, sparked nationwide panic and a transatlantic investigation from the bedroom of his home in Watford, Hertfordshire. He pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court in September to three counts of making hoax bomb threats. It followed an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

  • Three Men Arrested On Terrorism offences

    Police investigating extreme right-wing activity in the UK have arrested three men on suspicion of terrorism offences.

    Those arrested are a 17-year-old from London, a 21-year-old from Bath and an 18-year-old from Portsmouth.

    The investigation relates to alleged activity by a neo-Nazi group called the Sonnenkrieg Division.

  • Russia Will Make Missiles If US Leaves INF Treaty

    Russia will develop missiles banned under a Cold War agreement if the US exits the pact, President Vladimir Putin has warned.

    His comments follow Nato's accusation on Tuesday that Russia has already broken the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

    Signed in 1987 by the US and USSR, it banned both country's use of all short and medium-range missiles. But Mr Putin says the accusation is a pretext for the US to leave the pact.

  • Head Of Cosa Nostra Arrested In Palermo

    Italian police have arrested the man said to be the new head of the Sicilian Mafia, along with 45 associates.

    The dawn raid in Palermo netted 80-year-old jeweller Settimo Mineo. He was reportedly elected Cosa Nostra godfather at a Mafia meeting in May.

    Italian media describe him as the successor to Toto Riina, who died in jail a year ago. The Mafia suspects are accused of extortion, firearms offences, arson and other crimes.

  • Man Shot By Police During Wimbledon Robbery

    A man has been shot by police during a planned operation.

    A witness said he saw two men trying to rob a van outside a Sainsbury's in Wimbledon, south-west London, when officers "swarmed out of the bushes".

    The Met Police said the man was taken to hospital after the shooting in Lacock Close at about 08:10 GMT. The force said it was waiting for an update on his condition. A second man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to rob.

  • US Air Strike Kills Many Civilians

    A US airstrike in Afghanistan on Tuesday killed as many as 23 civilians, with most victims women and children, the UN says.

    The strike on a compound in Helmand province was called in during a joint operation between Afghan and US forces.

    Investigators said up to 10 children and eight women may have been killed. US forces say they are investigating. Civilian casualties from aerial attacks have surged since the US announced a new Afghan strategy last year.

  • Police Attacked In Durham Town Centre

    Up to 100 teenagers surrounded police in a town centre before a mob attacked officers during an "appalling" disturbance.

    Fireworks and bricks were launched and a community officer was punched in the face in Stanley, County Durham.

    Police have since launched a text alerts service to inform parents of local disorder, urging them to "take responsibility" for their children. It is hoped they will be encouraged to collect teenagers from disturbances.

  • Prisoner Confesses To 90 Murders Across The US

    An imprisoned murderer is being investigated after confessing to 90 killings across four decades in the US.

    The FBI believe Samuel Little, who is 78, may be among the most prolific serial killers in US criminal history.

    State and federal agencies are now working to match his confessions with the deaths of dozens of women across the country from 1970 to 2005.

    Investigators say they have already linked him to 34 murders and are working to corroborate many others.
