Report Into Wormwood Scrubs Finds Increase In Violence
Chronic staff shortages, food running out and a surge in violence were among the findings of a critical prison report into Wormwood Scrubs.
Inspectors also found areas of the west London jail were strewn with litter, attracting rats and cockroaches.
Chief inspector of prisons Peter Clarke said the findings painted an "extremely concerning picture". The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said the jail was recruiting staff in a bid to "urgently" raise standards.

British Man Found Guilty Of Joining IS
A British man has been found guilty of travelling to join so-called Islamic State in Syria.
Mohammed Abdallah received help from his brother Abdalraouf, who set up a "hub" of communication for would-be fighters from his home in Manchester.
The Old Bailey heard the 26-year-old intended to meet three fellow jihadis in Syria.

Bomb Maker For IRA Could Be Questioned Over Birmingham Bombings
A self-confessed IRA bomb maker could be questioned in connection with the Birmingham pub bombings, judges heard.
Michael Hayes may also be spoken to by lawyers acting for the coroner in the inquests into the deaths of the 21 victims, which are currently suspended.
Hayes, from Dublin, previously said he took "collective responsibility" for the IRA's activities in England, including the 1974 pub bombings. Twenty-one people died when two bombs were detonated in the city.

Plot To Kill Theresa May Revealed
A man is due to appear in court later over an alleged plot to kill the prime minister, Theresa May.
Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman, 20, from north London, is accused of planning to bomb Downing Street security gates and then attack the PM with a knife.
A second man, Mohammed Aqib Imran, 21, of Birmingham, is accused of the preparation of terrorist acts for allegedly planning to travel overseas. They were both arrested on 28 November.

Tourist Shot Dead In North Eastern Ethiopia
A German tourist has been shot dead and a guide injured during a visit to a volcano in north-eastern Ethiopia.
They were part of a group which had travelled to the Erta Ale volcano. It is not known who carried out the attack, but the Ethiopian government has launched an investigation.
The Afar region, which straddles the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia, is known as an operating ground for several separatist groups.

Airline Crew Witness North Korean Missile Test
Crew on board a Cathay Pacific plane flying over Japan reported a suspected sighting of last week's North Korean missile test, the airline said.
The company confirmed that crew witnessed "what is suspected to be the re-entry" of the missile into the earth's atmosphere. It added that as things stand no flight routes were being modified.

Terrorism Ruled Out After Bomb Found At German Christmas market
Police investigating a bomb found at a Christmas market in Germany on Friday say it was not terrorism but an attempt to blackmail the shipping company, DHL.
The nail bomb was sent in a parcel to a pharmacy near a market in Potsdam.
Police performed a controlled explosion on the device, which was full of explosives but had no detonator.

Many Injured And Killed In Peshawar College Gun Attack
Gunmen have stormed a college in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least nine people and injuring 36.
At least three men disguised in burkas arrived in a rickshaw and entered the Peshawar Agriculture Training Institute on Friday morning.
All of the attackers were also killed, the army said. The Pakistani Taliban said they had carried out the attack. The college was thought to have been closed for the Eid-e-Milad holiday.
At least one blast was heard from inside the campus, according to media reports citing the military. Police and army commandos cordoned off the site.

Suspected Terror Attack In Southern Israel
A soldier has been stabbed to death in southern Israel in what police say was a suspected terror attack.
Sgt Ron Isaac Kukia, 19, was killed at a bus stop in the city of Arad on Thursday night. Security forces are searching for at least one attacker.
The attack comes amid an increase in tension, after a Palestinian was shot dead by an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank earlier in the day. Israel also struck the Gaza Strip in retaliation for mortar fire.
Hundreds of police and troops have been deployed around Arad and roadblocks have been set up in the hunt for suspects.

Rogue states and terrorists will get their hands on lethal artificial intelligence "in the very near future", a House of Lords committee has been told.
