• China Accuses British Navy Of Sailing Within Its Territory

    China has accused the UK of "provocative actions", after a British warship sailed close to the disputed Paracel islands in the South China Sea.

    The Chinese told HMS Albion to leave in "an aggressive manner", taking position "irresponsibly close" to the ship.

    The Royal Navy said it was conducting a freedom of navigation exercise "in full compliance with international law". But China said the UK had entered its territorial waters without permission.

  • Russian Nationals Named In Novichok Poisoning

    Two Russian nationals have been named as suspects in the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

    There is "sufficient evidence" to charge Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov over the attack in Salisbury, Scotland Yard and the CPS say.

    They are thought to have been using the names as aliases and are about 40.

  • Man Found In Cemetery Dies From Gunshot Wound

    A man has died of gunshot wounds after he was found injured in a north London cemetery.

    Police have launched a murder investigation after the 22-year-old was discovered in Tottenham Cemetery in the early hours of Monday.

    Armed officers, the National Police Air Service and London Ambulance Service also went to the scene.

    Scotland Yard said the man's family has been informed but police are awaiting formal identification.

    A post-mortem will take place in due course, detectives said. They are asking for the public's help as no arrests have yet been made.

  • 400 Prisoners Escape After Tripoli Violence

    Some 400 prisoners have escaped from a facility near the Libyan capital Tripoli amid deadly violence between militia groups in the city, police say.

    "The detainees were able to force open the doors" in order to leave the Ain Zara prison, the local police said. They added that guards, fearing for their lives, were unable to prevent the breakout following riots at the jail.

    Clashes between militias in the city have led Libya's UN-backed government to declare a state of emergency.

  • Two Wounded After Stabbing At Amsterdam Railway Station

    Two people have been wounded in a stabbing incident at Amsterdam's central railway station, Dutch police say.

    The suspected attacker was shot and wounded by police. The motive is unclear and officials say an investigation is under way.

    All three have been taken to hospital for treatment.

    Some train services in and out of the station were suspended during the incident and two platforms closed.

  • Theresa May Assassination Plotter Jailed For Life

    A man who plotted to kill the Prime Minister has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 30 years.

    Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman, 21, from north London, was convicted last month of preparing acts of terrorism.

    Rahman had planned to detonate a bomb at the gates of Downing Street and then gain access to the street itself to assassinate Theresa May.

    Sentencing him, Mr Justice Haddon-Cave said Rahman "would have carried out his attack" had he not been arrested. Rahman was captured by an undercover operation involving the Metropolitan Police, MI5 and the FBI.

  • President Trump Lashes Out At China In Latest Tweets

    US President Donald Trump has lashed out at China for undermining its work with North Korea, as criticism over progress on denuclearisation mounts.

    In a series of tweets he also said he saw no reason to resume the joint war games with South Korea that have angered North Korea. Days ago his own defence secretary said military exercises might continue.

    China has accused Mr Trump of "shifting blame" in his comments on its relations with North Korea.

  • 16 Year Old Arrested For Shooting Tourist In Canada

    A 16-year-old teenager is facing a slew of charges in the shooting of a German tourist in Canada earlier this month.

    Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced the teenager was arrested last Friday on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation in Alberta.

    The youth, who cannot be named because he is a minor, faces 14 charges including attempted murder.

    The tourist, 60, was shot in the head as he was driving with his family about 60km (40 miles) west of Calgary.

    The shooting took place on 2 August on a rural highway in what police said at the time might be a case of road rage.

    Russia plans to hold massive war games involving 300,000 personnel next month - its biggest military manoeuvres since a Cold War drill in 1981.

    Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the drills were justified given "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes towards his country.

    Units from China and Mongolia will also take part in the exercises at military ranges in central and eastern Russia. The manoeuvres come at a time of rising tension between Nato and Russia.   • IS Release New Audio Message Of Their Leader

    The Islamic State group (IS) has released an audio message purportedly from its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, his first in almost in a year.

    In a speech, he calls on IS supporters to "persevere", despite the losses the group has suffered in Iraq and Syria. The recording's authenticity could not be verified, but experts said the voice resembled that heard in other messages.

    Although it is undated, there are references to recent events, including the detention of a US pastor in Turkey.
