• Russian Poisoning Suspect Is A Decorated Military Officer

    A Russian man accused of the Salisbury poisoning is a military officer who received an honour from Vladimir Putin, an investigative website says.

    Following the attempted poisoning in March, UK investigators identified one of the two suspects as Ruslan Boshirov.

    President Putin claimed Boshirov was a civilian, and on Russian TV, he himself said he visited Salisbury as a tourist. But the website Bellingcat says he is actually an intelligence officer by the name of Colonel Anatoliy Chepiga.

    He has served in Chechnya and Ukraine and was made a "Hero of the Russian Federation" in 2014.

  • Police Force In Acapulco Disarmed Over Links With Drug Gangs

    The entire police force in the coastal Mexican resort of Acapulco is under investigation amid suspicions of infiltration by drug gangs.

    Two commanders accused of murder are being sought while the rest of the city's police have been disarmed.

    State police and the military will patrol the city instead.

    Acapulco became famous as a destination for the rich and famous but it has fallen prey to the drugs trade and has a rampant murder rate. Last year, it stood at 103 per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest in Mexico.

  • Chinese Man Accused Of Spying On US

    A Chinese man has been arrested for allegedly spying on US engineers and scientists on behalf of Beijing, US prosecutors say.

    Ji Chaoqun, 27, was arrested in Chicago and charged with acting as an illegal foreign agent in the US, according to the US attorney's office.

    Mr Ji came to the US in 2013 to study electrical engineering and enlisted in the US Army Reserves in 2016. He allegedly sought to provide details on eight people for recruitment.

  • British Man And Wife Murdered In Thailand Victims Of Contract Killing

    The bodies of a UK millionaire and his Thai wife have been found in northern Thailand nearly a week after what police suspect was a contract killing.

    The bodies of Alan Hogg, 64, and Nod Suddaen, 64, were discovered buried on their property in Phrae province.

    Police say Mr Hogg, who was from Edinburgh, was shot dead, while his wife was killed with a hammer.

    Three suspects have been held. They are alleged to have been hired to carry out the attack by Nod Suddaen's brother. He has now been arrested.

  • Man Arrested After Fatal Shooting In Walthamstow

    A man was arrested on Sunday (September 23) and taken to an east London station for questioning.

    It comes after a 19-year-old man was gunned down in Walthamstow’s Vallentin Road at around 11pm on Saturday (September 22).

    The victim was driven to hospital by friends where he died at around 11.40pm. His family have been informed and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

    Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are appealing for witnesses to come forward to aid their investigation.

  • Man Arrested At Buckingham Palace For Possessing A Taser, Released

    A man arrested at Buckingham Palace on suspicion of possessing a Taser has been released by police.

    The 38-year-old, a visitor to London from the Netherlands, was detained at the visitors' entrance to the palace at about 12:45 BST on Sunday.

    Scotland Yard said his possession of the device, which was low-powered and part of a keyring, was a genuine error, and that he posed no threat. The man was released without further action.

  • Two Teenagers Arrested On Terror Charges

    Two 15-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of planning to carry out far-right terrorism offences in Kent.

    Police said the pair, both from Ramsgate, were arrested at their home addresses on suspicion of preparing for terrorist acts. Both of the teenagers are being questioned at a police station in the South East.

    The South East Counter Terrorism Unit has confirmed the alleged offences involved far-right ideology.

  • Kim Jong-un Pledges To Close Missile Site

    North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has agreed to shut one of the country's main missile testing and launch sites.

    He signed a pledge to permanently close the Tongchang-ri facility, after talks in Pyongyang with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in. Both leaders also "agreed on a way to achieve denuclearisation" on the Korean peninsula, Mr Moon said.

    Mr Kim said he hoped to "visit Seoul in the near future" - he would be the first North Korean leader to do so.

    China has welcomed the outcome of the inter-Korean summit, saying both sides had found "new and important common ground".

  • Israel Says Assad Regime Is Responsible For Russian Aircraft Crash

    Israel says Syria is to blame for the deaths of 15 Russian aircrew shot down by Syrian forces after Israel launched an air raid on the city of Latakia.

    Israel "expressed sorrow" for the deaths but blamed "extensive and inaccurate" Syrian anti-aircraft fire.

    The Il-20 plane was downed over the Mediterranean Sea on Monday evening.

    Russia initially blamed "irresponsible" Israeli actions, but President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday it was "a chain of tragic accidental circumstances". Russia is supporting President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's civil war.

  • Five Hurt In Prison Disturbance

    Five prison staff were treated in hospital after a "major disturbance" at HMP Bedford, the Prison Officers' Association (POA) has said.

    It said "riot squads, with the support of dog sections and local staff, regained control" after violence broke out on Sunday morning.

    The Ministry of Justice confirmed that "staff successfully resolved an incident" at the prison. However, it rejected the claim that "riot squads" were deployed.
