President Obama: ''We should be able to achieve a resolution'' over Iran's nuclear programme
US President Barack Obama has said recent moves by Iran should offer the basis for a "meaningful agreement" on its nuclear programme.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly's annual meeting, Mr Obama said words now had to be matched by actions.
The US leader recently exchanged letters with his newly-elected counterpart over the nuclear issue.
Later, President Hassan Rouhani insisted Iran posed "absolutely no threat to the world or region".

Deathly Blast hits Syrian capital Damascus
Activists said at least seven people were killed in the blast
Several people have been killed and wounded in an explosion in the Syrian capital, Damascus, Syrian state TV reports.
The state new agency Sana said a "terrorist bombing" attack had taken place in the Tadamon district in the south of the capital.
Tadamon has been a battleground between rebel forces and the army for months.
Later on Tuesday, the UN General Assembly is due to meet, with much of its focus on the Syria crisis.

Kenya Foreign Minister says one militant is a woman
Kenya Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed told the US PBS network that one of the militants was a British woman
A British woman is thought to be among militants who killed at least 67 people at a Kenyan shopping centre, the country's foreign minister has said.
Amina Mohamed said the woman had "done this many times before" and "two or three" Americans were also attackers.
Earlier, Kenya's interior minister said all of the militants were men although some may have been dressed as women.
Six British nationals are confirmed dead in the attack on the Westgate centre in Nairobi.

Kenyan forces secure the Westgate Shopping Centre
Kenyan forces are securing the Nairobi shopping centre attacked by suspected al-Shabab militants, as the stand-off enters its fourth day.
A senior police source said early on Tuesday the operation was "over", however journalists at the scene have reported sporadic gunfire at the mall.
There has been no official confirmation the siege is over. Kenya's president is expected to make a statement shortly.
At least 65 people have been killed, including three soldiers.

Hundreds die in Pakistan Earthquake

A powerful earthquake has killed at least 328 people and wounded hundreds more in Pakistan's remote south-west province of Balochistan.
The 7.7-magnitude quake struck on Tuesday afternoon at a depth of 20km (13 miles) north-east of Awaran, the US Geological Survey said.
Many houses were flattened and thousands of people have spent the night in the open.
After the quake, an island appeared off the coast near the port of Gwadar.

Greenpeace crew accused of piracy in Arctic by Russia
The BBC's Daniel Sandford: "This is the first time that Greenpeace have found themselves at the criminal end of the piracy law"
Russian prosecutors have accused 30 Greenpeace activists of piracy and say they will prosecute all of them for trying to board an Arctic oil platform.
Russia's Investigative Committee, modelled on the FBI, will question the activists. Six Britons are among them.
Their ship, the Arctic Sunrise, is being towed to the port of Murmansk.
Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said "all those who assaulted the platform, regardless of nationality, will be prosecuted".

US-Somalis condemn shopping centre bloodshed
Officials at the Islamic centre deny anyone has been recruited for al-Shabab at their mosque
US-Somalis in Minnesota have condemned the Nairobi shopping centre attack, after Kenyan officials said one or two of the suspected al-Shabab militants involved were from the US state.
In the city of Minneapolis, mosque leaders said such violence had nothing to do with Islam.
Minnesota is thought to be home to about 70,000 people of Somali origin.
The FBI says at least 20 young men from the US state have gone to Somalia since 2007 to join al-Shabab.

Obama in gun law plea after Washington Navy Yard deaths
President Obama: "No other advanced nation endures this kind of violence. None"
President Barack Obama has renewed calls for changes to US gun laws at a memorial service for the victims of last week's shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.
Mr Obama said tears were "not enough".
The president told mourners Americans must insist that "there is nothing normal about innocent men and women being gunned down where they work".
Twelve people were killed last Monday by contractor Aaron Alexis, who was himself shot dead by police.
The 34-year-old reportedly had untreated mental health difficulties.

France's Hollande to meet Iran's Rouhani at UN
The office of French President Francois Hollande says he will meet his Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York next week.
It comes as President Hassan Rouhani has indicated a more moderate and Western-friendly attitude than his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
There has been speculation that Mr Rouhani might also meet US President Barack Obama in New York.
Correspondents say this would herald a major thaw in US-Iran relations.
French officials said the meeting between Mr Hollande and Mr Rouhani on Tuesday had been organised at the request of Iran.

Venezuelan National Guards Arrested for Drug Smuggling
Three members of Venezuela's National Guard have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the smuggling of a massive haul of cocaine on an Air France flight from Caracas to Paris.
French border police found 1.3 tonnes of cocaine in 31 suitcases on a flight arriving from Caracas.
The seizure was one of the biggest ever to be made on French territory.
Venezuelan Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez said he expected more arrests would be made over the coming days.
