• Red Cross Workers Killed In Afghanistan By IS

    Six Afghan Red Cross workers have been killed by suspected Islamic State (IS) group gunmen in the northern province of Jowzjan, officials say.

    The workers were shot dead in the Qush Tepa area, the governor said.

    Two others are unaccounted for, feared abducted by the group, he said. The ICRC confirmed the deaths but said it did not know who had killed its staff.

    IS has been active in Afghanistan since 2015, claiming recent attacks in the east and Kabul. There was no immediate claim for the attack in Jowzjan.

  • Married Couple Planned Terror Attack In Sydney

    A married teenage couple have been charged with planning to carry out a terror attack in Sydney.

    Sameh Bayda and Alo-Bridget Namoa, both 19, are accused of "conspiracy to do an act, or acts in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act or acts". The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, the Australian Federal Police said.

    The pair were already in custody after being arrested in early 2016 on lesser charges, a court heard on Wednesday.

  • Amnesty International Claim 13,000 People Executed In Syrian Prison

    As many as 13,000 people, most of them civilian opposition supporters, have been executed in secret at a prison in Syria, Amnesty International says.

    A new report by the human rights group alleges that mass hangings took place every week at Saydnaya prison between September 2011 and December 2015.

    Amnesty says the alleged executions were authorised at the highest levels of the Syrian government. The government has previously denied killing or mistreating detainees.

  • 445 People With IS Links Arrested In Turkey

    Turkish police have detained 445 people suspected of links to the Islamic State group, state media say.

    Co-ordinated early morning raids were carried out in 18 provinces, Anadolu News Agency reported, quoting anonymous security sources.

    Most of those held are foreigners, among them 60 people taken into custody in the capital, Ankara, it said.

    IS claimed responsibility for the New Year shooting attack on an Istanbul nightclub which left 39 people dead.

    Last month police arrested an Uzbek national, Abdulkadir Masharipov, suspected of mounting the assault on revellers at the Reina nightclub.

  • Security Guard Shoots Dead Afghan Diplomat In Pakistan

    An Afghan diplomat has been shot dead by a security guard at the country's consulate in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi.

    Third secretary Mohammad Zaki died of his injuries shortly after the attack, a spokesman for the consulate said. The private security officer, who is an Afghan, is in custody. Police say he was the diplomat's personal bodyguard.

  • Russell Square Knife Attacker Admits Killing Woman

    A knife attacker has admitted killing a US tourist and wounding five others in a rampage in central London.

    Zakaria Bulhan, from Tooting, south-west London, carried out the attack in Russell Square on 3 August last year.

    Retired teacher Darlene Horton, 64, was visiting the city with her husband when she was killed.

    Bulhan, 19, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and charges of wounding. He had been charged with murder and attempted murder, but the court accepted his plea.

  • Man Shot By French Soldier Outside The Louvre Paris

    A French soldier guarding the Louvre in Paris has shot a man who tried to attack a security patrol with a machete shouting "Allahu Akbar", police say.

    The man, who tried to gain entry to the Louvre's shopping centre, was shot in the abdomen and seriously injured. One soldier received a head injury.

    Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the attack was "terrorist in nature". The Louvre, home to numerous celebrated art works, is the most visited museum in the world.

  • South Korea And Japan Visited By US Defence Secretary

    US defence secretary James Mattis is in South Korea on the first foreign trip by a senior official in the Trump administration.

    Mr Mattis is expected to use the visit to reassure Seoul of continuing US commitment to security deals in the face of threats from North Korea.

    While campaigning, Donald Trump accused South Korea and Japan of not paying enough for US military support. He also suggested they could be allowed to arm themselves with nuclear weapons. Both Japan and South Korea rejected this idea.

  • Anti-Government Protests In Romania Grow

    The Romanian capital, Bucharest, has seen one of its largest ever anti-government protests after a decree was passed that could free dozens of officials jailed for corruption.

    A crowd of at least 150,000 was reported outside government offices late on Wednesday and rallies took place in other towns and cities.

    As the protesters dispersed, a group of football supporters threw firecrackers at police who responded with tear gas. The decree was passed late on Tuesday.
