• US Military Pilots Irritated By Lasers From Chinese Base

    The US has formally complained to China over several incidents of its pilots being irritated by lasers it says are coming from a Chinese base in Djibouti.

    The Pentagon said it had asked China to investigate what it called "very serious incidents". It said people at the east African base had been shining military-grade lasers at US pilots coming in to land.

    In one case, two pilots on a cargo plane suffered minor eye injuries, officials said.

    The US has a military base in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa, which is used for counter terrorism operations in Africa and the Middle East.

  • Two More British Citizens Arrested In Iran

    Two people with links to the UK have been arrested in Iran, according to the Foreign Office and the British Council.

    Mahan Abedin has dual Iranian and British citizenship - while Aras Amiri is an Iranian living in London who works for the British Council.

    The Foreign Office said it is "urgently seeking information" about Mr Abedin. He is not the first UK citizen to be detained in Iran recently - Abbas Edalat, a British-Iranian academic, was arrested in Tehran in April. And Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian arrested in April 2016, is serving a five-year jail sentence in Iran.

  • Ex-Soldier Was Collecting Knives Before He Murdered Pensioner

    The parents of a mentally ill ex-soldier warned a health trust he was collecting knives before he murdered an 83-year-old dog walker.

    Alexander Palmer, 24, stabbed Peter Wrighton 45 times in woodland near East Harling, Norfolk, in August.

    A letter from a Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust psychiatrist said Palmer was told to "get rid" of the weapons and would "hopefully" comply. The trust said an internal review into the case was under way.

  • Trial Continues Of Two Boys Who Plotted School Attack

    Two boys plotted to kill fellow pupils and teachers after becoming obsessed with a school shooting in the US, a court heard.

    Prosecutors allege the pair "hero-worshipped" two students who killed 12 pupils and a teacher at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999. The boys, both 15, deny conspiracy to murder and other offences.

    They allegedly planned the attack at a school in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, Leeds Crown Court heard.

    The Columbine massacre was carried out by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who then committed suicide.

  • One Man Dies After London Shooting

    A man has died and another man has been injured in a shooting in north-west London.

    The victim, believed to be in his 30s, was found with serious injuries outside Queensbury Tube station just after 21:00 BST on Tuesday and died at the scene. The other man, in his 20s, is in hospital in a stable condition suffering from a gunshot wound.

    Police said they were investigating the death as murder.

    Scotland Yard said officers were called to Cumberland Road in Edgware, where they found the two men.

  • Benjamin Netanyahu Claims Iran Has A Secret Nuclear Weapons Programme

    US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says a landmark nuclear deal with Iran was "built on lies", after Israel claimed to have proof of a secret Iranian nuclear weapons programme.

    Mr Pompeo said documents revealed by Israel's prime minister were authentic.

    Analysts say they show nothing new, highlighting that concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions led to the 2015 deal.

    US President Donald Trump, who opposes the accord, has until 12 May to decide whether to abandon it or not. Other Western powers, including signatories Britain and France, say Iran has been abiding by the deal and it should be kept.

  • Military Sites In Syria Hit By Series Of Missile Strikes

    Missile strikes on military sites in northern Syria overnight reportedly killed a number of pro-government fighters, including Iranians.

    The Syrian military said facilities in Hama and Aleppo provinces were struck. It did not say if there were any casualties. But a UK-based monitoring group said four Syrians and 22 foreigners, mostly Iranians, died. It is not known who was behind the attacks. Western nations and Israel have previously hit sites in Syria.

  • Leaders Of North And South Korea Hold Summit

    The leaders of North and South Korea have agreed to work to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons after holding a historic summit.

    The announcement was made by the North's Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in of South Korea after talks at the border.

    The two also agreed to push towards turning the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 into a peace treaty this year. It comes just months after warlike rhetoric from North Korea.

    Details of how denuclearisation would be achieved were not made clear and many analysts remain sceptical about the North's apparent enthusiasm for engagement.

  • Office For National Statistics Show Increase In Knife And Gun Crime

    Knife crime rose by 22% in England and Wales in 2017, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

    The figures, which cover crimes recorded by the police, also showed an 11% increase in firearms offences.

    A separate survey on the public's experience of crimes in the two countries said there had been no change in overall violent offences.

    The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) said most types of crime stayed at similar levels to 2016. It added that eight-in-10 adults had not experienced any crimes asked about in the survey throughout 2017.

  • Electronic Hotel Door Locks Vulnerable To Hacking

    Millions of electronic door locks fitted to hotel rooms worldwide have been found to be vulnerable to a hack.

    Researchers say flaws they found in the equipment's software meant they could create "master keys" that opened the rooms without leaving an activity log.

    The F-Secure team said it had worked with the locks' maker over the past year to create a fix. But the Swedish manufacturer is playing down the risk to those hotels that have yet to install an update.
