• Pakistani city of Quetta sees 9 killed in gun attack

    At least nine people were killed when gunmen opened fire outside a mosque in the second attack in Quetta in south-west Pakistan in as many days.

    About 20 others were wounded in the attack, which came as worshippers left the Sunni Muslim mosque after sunrise prayers for the Eid al-Fitr festival.

    Bullets hit the car of Ali Madad Jatak, a former Pakistan People's Party provincial minister, but he was unhurt.

    On Thursday dozens of people died in a suicide bomb blast in Quetta.

    In the latest attack, four unidentified men opened fire on the former minister as prayers came to a close.

  • Diplomats withdrawn from consulate in Pakistan by US

    The US has ordered all non-essential government personnel to leave its consulate in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

    A senior State Department official said the move was in response to a "credible threat" to the consulate.

    US personnel remaining in Lahore should limit non-essential travel within the country, the official said.

    On Thursday, the US reiterated a travel warning advising all US citizens to defer non-essential travel to Pakistan.

    "We are undertaking this drawdown due to concerns about credible threat information specific to the US Consulate in Lahore," the official said.

  • Domenico Rancadore arrested as suspected Mafia Boss

    A mafia boss found living in London has been denied bail while Italian authorities seek his extradition.

    Domenico Rancadore headed a family involved in extortion, racketeering and drug trafficking, Italian police claim.

    The 64-year-old was arrested on Wednesday at a house in Uxbridge under a European Arrest Warrant.

    A judge at Westminster Magistrates' Court denied Rancadore bail and scheduled a full extradition hearing for 25 November.

    A new arrest warrant was issued for Rancadore earlier after his lawyers claimed there were "significant deficiencies" in the original warrant.

  • Border staff in France not fingerprinting illegels

    UK border staff in France are failing to take the fingerprints of thousands of illegal immigrants caught trying to enter Britain, inspectors say.

    The Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration said records should be kept in case the same people later claimed asylum in the UK.

    John Vine also said people-smugglers were not being fined heavily enough.

    The Home Office pointed to positive elements of the report and said it had "already addressed" some of the issues.

    At least 14 suspected al-Qaeda militants have been killed in Yemen in three drone strikes, officials say.

    The number of such strikes in Yemen, presumably launched by the US, has been stepped up over the past month.

    The latest attacks come a day after Yemeni authorities said they had foiled a major al-Qaeda plot against oil pipelines and ports.

    Yemen is deemed a stronghold of an al-Qaeda offshoot considered by Washington to be the most dangerous to the West.

  • Israeli military orders shutdown of Eilat Airport

    Eilat airport in southern Israel was briefly shut on Thursday after the military ordered the closure of surrounding airspace.

    "Security assessments" based on "intelligence and other regional developments" had prompted the move, the military said.

    The airport re-opened after a closure of two hours.

    Eilat has been targeted in the past by rockets fired by Islamist militants in the neighbouring Sinai peninsula.

    Sinai has become increasingly lawless amid the instability generated by the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in early July.

    US President Barack Obama has cancelled a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin after Russia's decision to grant asylum to intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, the White House said.

    But Mr Obama will still attend the G20 economic talks in St Petersburg.

    A White House aide said Mr Snowden's asylum had deepened the pre-existing tension between the two countries.

    The Kremlin said it was disappointed by the move and that the invitation to bilateral talks remained in force.

    Yemen's security forces have been placed on a state of high alert amid fears of an al-Qaeda-linked attack.

    In the capital, Sanaa, tanks and troops have surrounded foreign missions, government offices and the airport.

    Both the US, which closed 20 embassies worldwide on Sunday, and the UK have withdrawn diplomatic staff from Yemen and urged their citizens to leave.

    Yemen has criticised the withdrawal, saying it served the interests of extremists.

  • Delta Airlines Flight Circles Over England To Us Up Fuel Before Emergency Landing

    An airliner flying from France to the USA which developed a technical fault and circled over the East of England has landed safely.

    The Delta Airlines Airbus left Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris at 11:50 BST on route to Detroit, but was unable to retract its wing flaps.

    Soon after take-off, flight DAL99 began circling above the skies of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire at 25,000ft (7,620m).

    After using up fuel, the plane landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

    The flight had 298 passengers and 11 crew members on board.
