    Europol has warned that militants from so-called Islamic State (IS) will aim to step up attacks on European targets, as they face defeat in the Middle East.

    The European police force says more foreign fighters will try to come back to Europe, and "several dozen" capable of attacks could already be there. Their tactics could include car bombs, kidnappings and extortion, it said. But the report plays down the likelihood of attacks on critical infrastructure, such as nuclear sites.

  • Three Shot Dead In Finland Shooting

    Three women - a local politician and two journalists - have been shot dead in Finland as they left a restaurant.

    The motive for the killings in the early hours of Sunday in the south-eastern town of Imatra is unclear. A local man aged 23 and with a criminal record has been arrested.

    Police said it appeared the victims had been chosen at random. The local politician was named as Tiina Wilen-Jappinen, the chairwoman of Imatra's town council.

    A rifle was used to carry out the shootings, police said, and the alleged perpetrator was detained almost immediately.

  • Un Warns Aleppo Could Become 'One Giant Graveyard'

    A top UN envoy has warned the Syrian city of Aleppo risks becoming "one giant graveyard" as the government advances on rebel-held areas.

    Stephen O'Brien pleaded with UN Security Council members to protect civilians "for the sake of humanity".

    At least 34 people died in the latest shelling of government and opposition-controlled areas, reports say. Troops and militiamen have retaken more than a third of the rebel-held eastern part of Aleppo since the weekend.

    The Islamic State group says it was behind a car and knife rampage at a US college that left 11 people injured.

    Monday's attack at Ohio State University was carried out by one of its students, Somali-born Abdul Razak Ali Artan, the authorities said.

    The IS-affiliated Amaq news agency called the 18-year-old business undergraduate a "soldier". Artan drove his car at a group of people, then attacked them with a knife before being shot dead.

    An employee of the German intelligence agency (BfV) has been arrested after making Islamist statements and sharing agency material, German media report.

    A BfV spokesman did not confirm a report in Die Welt newspaper that the man was suspected of planning a bomb attack on the BfV's Cologne office, Reuters news agency said. "There is no evidence to date that there is a concrete danger," he added.

    The man is reported to be of Spanish origin and a convert to Islam.

    Germany's foreign intelligence chief has warned that Russia could seek to disrupt next year's German elections with cyber attacks.

    Bruno Kahl said his agency was aware of cyber attacks with no other purpose than "causing political uncertainty". "Europe is in the focus of this attempted disruption, and Germany in particular," he told Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

    Russia or groups linked to Russia have been regularly accused of such attacks.

  • Axe Wielding Man Shot By Police In Hull

    Police officers have shot and injured a 31-year-old man in a Hull street.

    Humberside Police said armed officers had been sent to the Holderness Road area at around 09:20 GMT following reports of a man with an axe.

    The man was shot on Francis Street about 20 minutes later. The man is receiving medical treatment. The force said the incident had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and an investigation is underway.

    Anti-terrorism police patrol units are to be introduced across London boroughs.

    The Met said uniformed and undercover officers will be on the streets to spot those carrying out "hostile reconnaissance" and other crimes.

    The patrols will begin in Lambeth and Wandsworth "to disrupt potential terrorist activity and crime" on Monday. The force stressed the move was "not in response to a specific threat".

    Relatives of the Birmingham pub bombings victims have said they cannot understand why they are having to fight to get funding for their legal fees.

    A pre-inquest hearing into the deaths of 21 people in attacks at two pubs in 1974 opened on Monday.

    Last week marked the 42nd anniversary of the tragedy. At the hearing in Birmingham, Coroner Peter Thornton QC said he supported the families' claim for legal aid, but had no powers to grant it.
