• Chad former leader Hissene Habre arrested by Senegal Police

    Police in Senegal have arrested Chad's former leader Hissene Habre, who is wanted for alleged atrocities during his eight-year rule.

    Mr Habre's lawyer El Hadji Diouf said he was taken from his home in Dakar by paramilitary police to an unknown location on Sunday.

    The 70 year old has been under house arrest since 2005 in Senegal, where he fled after being deposed in 1990.

    He denies killing and torturing tens of thousands of his opponents.

    Last year the UN's International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Senegal to put him on trial or extradite him to face justice overseas.

  • Obama in Robben Island jail

    US President Barack Obama has toured Robben Island - the jail in which Nelson Mandela was kept for 18 years.

    He said he and his family were "deeply humbled" to visit the prison once inhabited by Mr Mandela - who remains critically ill in hospital.

    Mr Obama went on to give a speech at the University of Cape Town and launch a multi-billion-dollar electricity initiative.

    The US leader did not visit Mr Mandela, but met the Mandela family in private.

  • Mexico candidate wounded in attack

    A candidate in next week's regional elections in Mexico has been critically injured in a gun attack in the south of the country.

    Rosalia Palma, a candidate of the governing PRI party for the Oaxaca state assembly, was hit when her vehicle was fired on, officials said.

    Her husband and an aide were killed.

    Violence has marred the election campaign, the first since President Enrique Pena Nieto came to power last December.

    He has promised to review Mexico's "war on drugs" policy.

    Mark Carney has officially become head of the UK's central bank, replacing Sir Mervyn King as governor of the Bank of England.

    Mr Carney, who was head of Canada's central bank, is the first foreigner to run the 319-year-old institution.

    He takes over with interest rates at an all-time low and with several stimulus programmes in place to revive the economy following the financial crisis.

    Mr Carney is likely to oversee the Bank's exit from these measures.

    Children have been taken hostage, forced to watch torture and even participate in beheadings, it says; others have been killed while fighting.

    It says it suspects there are "reasonable grounds" to believe chemical weapons have been deployed.

    It urges foreign powers not to increase the availability of arms in Syria.

  • Powerful Russian mayor of Dagestan charged over murder

    Prosecutors in Moscow have charged a powerful local politician from the restive North Caucasus region over the murder of an investigator.

    Said Amirov, mayor of the city of Makhachkala in Dagestan, was arrested in a dramatic operation involving a helicopter and armoured vehicles.

    He was flown to Moscow and charged along with two other men over the murder of an investigator in 2011.

    He insisted he was innocent and said the case was politically motivated.

  • Queen marks Coronation anniversary at Westminster Abbey

    The Queen has joined 2,000 guests for a service at Westminster Abbey to mark 60 years since her Coronation.

    Some of those who took part in the 1953 service were among the congregation.

    Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Rev Justin Welby said the event honoured "60 years of commitment".

    The Queen was accompanied by more than 20 members of her family, including the Duke of Edinburgh, who pulled out of an engagement on Monday night because he was feeling unwell.

    Several key items from the Coronation were placed in Westminster Abbey for the service.

  • Tulisa Contostavlos arrested over drug deal claims

    The former X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos has been arrested over the supply of class A drugs.

    She had been accused over the weekend by a newspaper, who said she had introduced their reporter to a drug dealer.

    It was claimed the drug dealer then sold half an ounce of cocaine to them at London's Dorchester Hotel.

    Newsbeat asked for a comment from Tulisa's management but are still waiting for a response.

  • Three more arrests in Woolwich murder probe

    Three further arrests have been made in connection with the murder of off-duty soldier Lee Rigby, police have said.

    The Met said counter terrorism officers arrested three men, aged 21, 24 and 28, on Saturday evening on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder - a Taser was used on two of them.

    Drummer Rigby was run over and then attacked in Woolwich on Wednesday.

    Two men arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene remain in custody in hospital in a stable condition.

    Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, were shot and wounded by police.

  • Pair charged with endangering aircraft

    Two men have been charged with endangering an aircraft after RAF Typhoon jets escorted a passenger plane over the UK.

    Tayyab Subhani, 30, and Mohammed Safdar, 41, both of Nelson, Lancashire, were detained at Stansted on Friday.

    Police boarded the Pakistan International Airlines flight, originally en-route to Manchester, after it was diverted to Stansted.

    The defendants are due at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Monday.
