    The family of a black woman who died in police custody is suing the arresting officer and other Texas authorities.

    Sandra Bland died three days after a physical confrontation with a white police officer during a traffic stop. Police say that Bland hanged herself while being held in the Waller county jail. The family have denied that she was suicidal.

  • Amnesty International Claim Brazil Police Have Killed 'Hundreds'

    Campaign group Amnesty International says Brazil's military police have been responsible for more than 1,500 deaths in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the last five years.

    Amnesty says it has found evidence that police killings were often illegal, with officers shooting suspects who had surrendered or had been wounded. There has been no response so far from Brazil's military police. Police unions earlier said the number of officers killed was also very high.

  • Pro Government Forces In Yemen Claim Back Airbase From Houthi Rebels

    Pro-government forces in Yemen have retaken the country's largest airbase in a battle with Houthi rebels, government officials say.

    Heavy casualties have been reported at al-Anad airbase, north of Aden, after intense fighting there in recent days. It comes after pro-government forces, backed by air strikes from a Saudi-led coalition, retook Aden two weeks ago. The Saudis are leading a campaign to defeat the rebels, who control much of Yemen, and restore the government.

    Rick Perry, the former governor of Texas, is not among the 10 Republicans running for president who will take part in the first primetime TV debate.

    Donald Trump, Jeb Bush and Scott Walker will take the stage in Cleveland on Thursday night with seven rivals. Fox News selected the 10 most popular Republicans based on five national polls, excluding Mr Perry and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham. Those two and five other candidates will take part in an earlier debate.

  • Airport Staff Stop Pierce Brosnan Boarding Plane After Knife Found

    Pierce Brosnan has been stopped by airport security officials for trying to board a US flight carrying a knife.

    The former 007 star was prevented by Transportation Security Administration agents at Burlington International Airport in Vermont with the 10in (25cm) hunting knife in his hand luggage. The local police department said Brosnan was allowed to continue his journey after the issue was resolved.

  • NIESR Predicts That Global Economic Growth Will Slow This Year

    Global economic growth will slow this year to the lowest rate since the financial crisis, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR).

    The think tank cut its 2015 forecast to 3.0% from the 3.2% it predicted in May. It has cut growth forecasts for the US and many emerging market economies, although its forecast for the eurozone has only been cut slightly. Its growth forecast for the UK economy was unchanged at 2.5%.

  • Athens Trading Sees Green Bank Shares Fall For A Third Day

    Greek bank shares have fallen sharply for a third day, continuing the trend seen since the stock exchange re-opened at the start of the week.

    The banking sector share index fell 20%, after falling by about 30% on both Monday and Tuesday. Individual shares are not allowed to drop by more than 30% in one day on the Athens market.

  • Disney Misses Revenue Expectations For The First Time In Eight Quarters

    Disney posted a 5% increase in revenue for the three months to 27 June - but missed expectations for the first time in eight quarters. Analysts expected the entertainment group's revenues to be $13.2bn (£8.5bn), but the total was $100m less. Operating income fell at Disney's theme parks and resorts outside North America because of higher operating costs at Disneyland in Paris and Hong Kong.

    The Asian park also had fewer visitors in the period.

    India will restore free access to 857 pornographic websites, following widespread outrage over the move. The department of telecom told internet service providers not to disable URLs that "do not have child pornographic content", the PTI agency reported.

    The government denied charges of moral policing, saying it wanted to prevent children from accessing the sites. In July, the Supreme Court criticised the government's inability to block sites featuring child pornography.     Prime Minister David Cameron was "mesmerised" by the Kids Company boss Camila Batmanghelidjh and over-ruled concerns raised, it has been claimed.

    A senior figure involved in funding talks with the high-profile charity told the BBC's Norman Smith: "We were all over-ridden by Number 10."

    Kids Company, which faces accusations of financial mismanagement, is expected to close its services at 17:00 BST. It was given a £3m government grant a week ago.

    Measures are being put in place to support children who use the charity, which supports deprived young people and their families.
