• Shooting At Radio Station Leaves Two Dead In Dominican Republic

    Three men have been arrested after two journalists were killed during a live radio broadcast in the Dominican Republic.

    One of the journalists was filming his show on Facebook Live when he was shot. The footage showed his broadcast interrupted by gunfire and a panicked woman shouting "Shots! Shots! Shots!".

    Police said the shooting happened on Tuesday in San Pedro de Macoris, east of the capital Santo Domingo.

    The two journalists killed were presenter Luis Manuel Medina and radio producer Leo Martinez. A woman was also injured and is undergoing surgery, said local authorities.

  • New Cyber Security Centre In London Opened By Queen

    A new centre to protect the UK against cyber-attacks is to be officially opened by the Queen later.

    The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in London is designed to improve Britain's resilience to attacks and act as an operational nerve centre. "We want to make the UK the hardest target," Ciaran Martin, the centre's chief executive said.

    The NCSC - part of intelligence agency GCHQ - says the UK is facing about 60 serious cyber-attacks a month.

  • North Korean Kim Jong-nam Killed In Malaysia

    The half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been killed in Malaysia, South Korean and Malaysian sources say.

    Kim Jong-nam, 45, is said to have been targeted at the airport in Kuala Lumpur, the capital. A source close to the Malaysian PM's office said that Mr Kim was killed in the city, saying his body was now undergoing an autopsy.

    Kim Jong-nam is the eldest son of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

    Senior Malaysian police have confirmed that a North Korean man died in transit to hospital from the airport on Monday. They have not confirmed his identity.

  • 500lb WW2 Bomb Discovered In Thessaloniki

    A World War Two bomb has been deactivated in the Greek city of Thessaloniki after it forced the evacuation of some 70,000 people, officials say.

    The 250kg (500lb) bomb was discovered during excavation works. It will now be removed and taken to a firing range. It is thought to be one of the largest wartime bombs to be found in urban Greece.

    Police went house-to-house to evacuate residents so the work could be done.

    It was one of the largest peacetime evacuations in Greece. Many people left in their cars, but some were sent in buses to schools and sports halls.

  • Evacuation At German Airport After Gas Released In Ventilation System

    Hamburg airport in Germany was briefly evacuated and at least 50 people were hurt by an irritant gas that was released in the air.

    Both terminals were cleared and flights halted after people complained of eye irritation and breathing problems.

    Firefighters later found an empty cartridge, thought to have contained pepper spray, at the scene. They say a "prankster" may have released the pepper spray, which then spread through the ventilation system. Pepper spray is legal, and readily available, in Germany.

    The alarm was raised on Sunday after reports of a strong smell in the airport.

    Chaos in one of the biggest prisons in the country has been revealed in secret filming for the BBC.

    An undercover reporter spent two months at HMP Northumberland, which houses up to 1,348 male inmates, for Panorama. He discovered widespread drug use, a lack of control, door alarms that did not go off in one block and a hole in an internal security fence.

    The Ministry of Justice said it would investigate the "extremely serious allegations" at the Acklington jail.

  • US Commander Calls For More Troops In Afghanistan

    The commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan has said he needs a "few thousand" more troops to break a stalemate in the war with the Taliban.

    Gen John Nicholson told the US Senate Armed Services Committee he had enough forces for counter-terror operations. But he stressed extra troops were needed to help train the Afghan military. The soldiers, he said, could be American or from other Nato nations.

    He accused Russia and Iran of trying to undermine Nato in Afghanistan.

  • Terror Attack Prevented In Montpellier France

    A suspected would-be suicide bomber was one of four people arrested in the southern French city of Montpellier by anti-terrorist police.

    Home-made explosives similar to those used in the Paris attacks of November 2015 were also discovered, police and judicial sources said. A girl of 16 was arrested along with three young men.

    Since the beginning of 2015, at least 230 people have been killed in jihadist attacks in France.

    US forces killed 11 members of al-Qaeda in two air strikes near Idlib in Syria, this month, including a former ally of Osama Bin Laden, the Pentagon says.

    Captain Jeff Davis, a spokesman, said 10 operatives had been killed in a single strike last Friday. A second strike on Saturday killed Abu Hani al-Masri, who had close ties to the late al-Qaeda leader, he added.

    President Vladimir Putin has sent condolences after a Russian air strike accidentally killed three Turkish soldiers in northern Syria.

    The soldiers were supporting Syrian rebels in efforts to capture the city of al-Bab from so-called Islamic State. It is part of a broader offensive by Turkey to push IS and Kurdish fighters away from Turkey's southern border.

    Russia and Turkey, who back opposing sides in the war, have been jointly targeting IS in air strikes recently.
