British Soldier Killed Himself To Avoid Being Captured By IS
A Briton fighting in Syria "turned the gun on himself" to avoid being taken prisoner by so-called Islamic State, Kurdish have said.
Ryan Lock, 20, from Chichester in West Sussex, died on 21 December during a battle for the IS group's stronghold of Raqqa. He was fighting as a volunteer with the Kurdish armed fighting forces, the YPG.
The YPG said that "trace of a gunshot wound was found under the chin", suggesting suicide.
Sources said five fighters came under siege by IS - also known as ISIS - in the village of Ja'bar, and they showed "considerable resistance" before they were killed.

Multiple Raids Take Place In Germany Arresting 16 Jihadist Suspects
A 36-year-old Tunisian man suspected of recruiting for jihadist group Islamic State has been detained in multiple raids in Germany.
He was one of 16 people arrested across the central state of Hesse, as 1,100 police searched flats, businesses and mosques. The man is also wanted by Tunisian authorities over a jihadist attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunis.
Twenty-one tourists and a Tunisian were killed in March 2015. Many of the victims were British, Japanese, French, Italian or Colombian.

Trident II Missile Cap Washes Up On Bahamas Beach
In late October 2016, the residents of the tiny Bahamas island of Man-O-War Cay found a mysterious object had washed up on their beach.
Taller than a person, conical in shape with a large spike at the end, it looked unmistakably like some sort of missile. "People were curious of course, the kids were excited to see something so large on the beach," local resident Mailin Sands said.

Eastern Ukrainian Town Could Be Evacuated As Fighting Continues
Ukrainian officials are preparing for a possible evacuation of the eastern frontline town of Avdiivka amid renewed fighting with pro-Russian rebels.
If evacuation takes place, officials say up to 8,000 people could be removed each day from the government-held town, which has no water or electricity.
Shelling and the deaths of several more people were reported by both sides on Tuesday. Each blames the other for the upsurge in violence.

Saudi Warship Attacked In Red Sea
The Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen's Houthi rebels says two crew members have been killed in an attack on one of its warships in the Red Sea.
A coalition statement said three Houthi "suicide boats" had approached a Saudi frigate west of Hudaydah on Monday.
One of the boats collided with the rear of the frigate and exploded, causing a fire, the statement added. However, a rebel-controlled news agency cited a source as saying the warship had been hit by a guided missile.

Many Killed At al-Qaeda Stronghold By US In Central Yemen
The US has carried out a commando raid on an al-Qaeda stronghold in central Yemen, killing 14 militants, the military says.
One US soldier died and three were injured.
Several Apache helicopters were reported to have taken part in the operation in al-Baida province. Three al-Qaeda leaders were among those killed in a battle lasting 45 minutes in a village in Yakla district. Earlier reports suggested a higher death toll.
US drones have carried out periodic attacks on al-Qaeda in Yemen. Local sources earlier said 41 militants and 16 civilians were killed.

Numbers of signatories have been rising rapidly since a US clampdown on immigration came into effect over the weekend, causing anger worldwide.

Six Killed In Shooting At Quebec City Mosque
Six people have been killed and another eight wounded in a shooting at a mosque in Quebec City, Canada, police say.
Shots were fired at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre on Sunday night, where more than 50 people had gathered for evening prayers.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and another was arrested nearby. Police do not believe there are other suspects at large.

Girl Aged 16 Jailed In Germany For Stabbing Police Officer
A girl aged 16 has been jailed by a German court for six years for what is seen as the country's first attack by a sympathiser of jihadist group Islamic State (IS).
Safia S, who was 15 at the time, stabbed and seriously wounded a police officer in the neck at the central station in Hanover.
Prosecutors described the attack as ordered and supervised by IS. She was convicted of attempted murder and helping a terrorist organisation.

President Trump Claims Waterboarding Works
US President Donald Trump has said he believes waterboarding works, stating "we have to fight fire with fire".
Mr Trump said that while radical groups beheaded people in the Middle East "we're not playing on an even field". But Mr Trump also said he would consult Defence Secretary James Mattis and CIA director Mike Pompeo and "if they don't want to do it that's fine".
Both have indicated opposition to reintroducing the interrogation method, widely considered a form of torture. Former CIA director Leon Panetta said it would be a "serious mistake to take a backward step" on torture.
