• Eight People Rescued After US Navy Aircraft Crashes

    Eight people have been rescued after a US Navy aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers crashed off the coast of Japan, the defence ministry has said.

    It says that preliminary US military reports indicated that engine failure may have caused the crash.

    The Navy did not say what kind of aircraft was involved, but Japan's Self-Defense Forces have said it was a C-2 transport aircraft. The aircraft was travelling to a US aircraft carrier in the Philippine Sea.

    Japanese and American rescuers raced to get to the stricken plane, which ditched in seas off the remote Japanese reef of Okinotori.

  • 1990's Bosnian Commander Jailed For Life Over Genocide

    Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has been jailed for life for genocide and other atrocities in the 1990s Bosnian war.

    Known as the "Butcher of Bosnia", Mladic led forces during the massacre of Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) in Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo.

    The UN tribunal in The Hague convicted him on 10 of the 11 charges.

  • President Mugabe Resigns

    Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned, parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda has said.

    A letter from Mr Mugabe said that the decision was voluntary and that he had made it to allow a smooth transfer of power, the Reuters news agency reports.

    The surprise announcement halted an impeachment hearing that had begun against him. Lawmakers roared in jubilation and people have begun celebrating in the streets.

    Mr Mugabe had previously refused to resign despite last week's military takeover and days of protests. He has been in power since independence in 1980.

  • Suicide Bomber Kills Dozens Of Worshippers In Nigeria

    At least 50 people have been killed in a suicide bombing in the eastern Nigerian state of Adamawa, police say.

    A bomber struck inside a mosque packed with worshippers during morning prayers in the town of Mubi. Witness Abubakar Sule told AFP news agency that it appeared the bomber was part of the congregation.

    No-one has said they were behind the bombing but the Islamist militants Boko Haram typically target crowded places in northern Nigeria.

  • Radioactive Isotope Traces Found In Russian Territories

    Russia says a nuclear accident has not occurred on its territory despite "extremely high" traces of a radioactive isotope being found.

    Russia's weather service acknowledged it had measured pollution of ruthenium-106 at 1,000 times normal levels in the Ural mountains. It said there was no health risk.

    The announcement appeared to confirm a report by France's nuclear safety institute which detected a cloud of radioactive pollution over Europe.

  • Cult Leader Charles Manson Dies

    Charles Manson, the notorious cult leader who directed his followers to commit a string of brutal murders, and who became a symbol of the dark side of 1960s counterculture, has died aged 83.

    Manson was admitted to Bakersfield hospital, California earlier this month and died of natural causes on Sunday.

    In 1969, his followers, known as the Manson Family, killed nine people. Among the victims of the killing spree was heavily pregnant Hollywood actress Sharon Tate, wife of Roman Polanski.

  • Argentina's Navy Continues Search For Missing Submarine

    Argentina's navy says its ARA San Juan submarine, which has been missing since Wednesday, reported a mechanical breakdown in its last communication.

    The submarine, with 44 crew on board, disappeared 430km (267 miles) off the Argentine coast and no trace of it has been found.

    "The vessel surfaced and it reported a breakdown," naval commander Gabriel Galeazzi said. He did not give further details of the nature of the breakdown.

    Notorious Sicilian Mafia "boss of all bosses" Salvatore "Toto" Riina has died from cancer in jail, aged 87.

    Riina was serving 26 life sentences and is believed to have ordered more than 150 murders.

    The head of the feared Cosa Nostra spent nearly a quarter of a century on the run before being jailed in 1993. He ordered more murders from jail.

    Wide variations in the way police chiefs are paid have been revealed, as the pay, allowances and expenses of senior police officers in England and Wales are published for the first time.

    The statistics, for 2015-16, show salary payments ranging from £7,622 to £278,563.

    Meanwhile, benefits range from none at all to £32,521 in one case. The Home Office, which compiled the data, also set a limit on the amount of annual leave chief constables can take.

  • British Student Freed From United Arab Emirates Prison

    A British student has been freed from jail in the United Arab Emirates after a three-year campaign for his release.

    Ahmad Zeidan was imprisoned in 2014 after 0.04g of cocaine was found in a car in which he was a passenger. He always claimed he was innocent.

    His father Manal said his son was freed after a £4,000 fine was paid and added: "We are overjoyed... he is finally free and still can't believe it's real."

    The Foreign Office, which worked on the case, has been contacted for comment.
