• US allows Boeing Airplane Component Sales to Iran

    The US Treasury has granted plane manufacturer Boeing a licence to export certain spare commercial parts to Iran, a company spokesman says.

    Boeing has had no public dealings with Tehran since 1979.

    In a statement, the US company said the licence had been granted for the safety of flight.

    The step is being seen as part of a temporary agreement to ease sanctions on Tehran that US Secretary of State John Kerry reached with Iran last year.

  • Barclays sells its United Arab Emirates retail business

    Barclays has agreed to sell its retail banking arm in the United Arab Emirates to Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB).

    ADIB is paying £107m ($177m) for the business which has 110,000 customers. Most of those are expatriate workers.

    Customers who move to ADIB will have to switch to finance schemes that are compliant with Islamic rules, which do not allow interest payments.

    Barclays says the deal will allow it to focus on its corporate and investment banking operations in the region.

  • Deadly clash in Jordan's Zaatari camp

    At least one person has been reported killed and dozens hurt in a riot at Jordan's Zaatari camp, home to some 106,000 refugees from Syria's war.

    Jordanian forces used tear gas against stone-throwing refugees who had set fire to tents and vehicles.

    Both sides blame each other for provoking the violence. The dead person was a Syrian refugee, officials say.

    The sprawling camp has seen several protests since opening two years ago, mainly over poor living conditions.

    Zaatari is located in the Jordanian desert, about 12km (7.5 miles) from the Syrian border.

  • Hammer attack in Marble Arch Hotel room

    Three women have been bludgeoned by a hammer-wielding attacker in a room at a central London hotel.

    The man entered a room on the seventh floor of the Cumberland Hotel in Marble Arch where three women and three children were sleeping, police said.

    It is believed that when one of the women woke up, they were hit about the face and head with a hammer.

    The Met said the condition of one woman was "critical" and the attack was being treated as attempted murder.

    Scotland Yard said the suspect struck shortly before 02:00 BST on Sunday and a hammer was recovered from the scene.

  • US created 'Cuban Twitter' to stir unrest

    The US created a text-message social network designed to foment unrest in Cuba, according to an investigation by the Associated Press news agency.

    ZunZuneo, dubbed a "Cuban Twitter", had 40,000 subscribers at its height in a country with limited web access.

    The project reportedly lasted from 2009-12 when the grant money ran out.

    The US is said to have concealed its links to the network through a series of shell companies and by funnelling messages through other countries.

  • Brazilian troops in Rio slum operation before World Cup

    Nearly 3,000 Brazilian troops have begun occupying one of Rio de Janeiro's most dangerous shanty towns.

    It is the biggest such operation since the authorities began tackling powerful drug gangs in key areas of the city ahead of the football World Cup in June and July.

    Tanks, helicopters and armoured vehicles are being used in the operation at the Mare slum complex.

    Elite troops are expected to remain in the area until after the tournament.

    For decades the area, near Rio's international airport, has been controlled by some of the city's most powerful drug gangs.

  • Luis Solis wins Costa Rican presidential poll

    Luis Guillermo Solis of the centre-left Citizen Action Party (PAC) has won the presidential election in Costa Rica.

    With almost all the votes counted, Mr Solis had 78%.

    He had been expected to win after his rival - governing party candidate Johnny Araya - had stopped campaigning after opinion polls suggested Mr Solis had an unassailable lead.

    Mr Solis's win breaks with the traditional two-party system which has dominated in Costa Rica for decades.

    Mr Araya, whose name remained on the ballot even after he pulled out, got 22%.

  • Major Clashes at Brussels march for jobs

    A big anti-austerity demonstration has been taking place in the European quarter of Brussels, where EU offices are located.

    Water cannon and pepper spray were used to try to disperse protesting Belgian trade unionists near the headquarters of the European Commission and the European Council.

    Thousands of people have been marching through the streets carrying banners and placards criticising the austerity policies which are supported by EU institutions. They include demonstrators from other EU countries.

  • Mafia Boss Domenico Rancadore in custody again

    A convicted Mafia boss has been remanded in custody after being rearrested over his connections to the criminal network.

    Domenico Rancadore, 65, was held in west London after a fresh European Arrest Warrant was received from Italy.

    He had been allowed to stay in the UK after winning an extradition battle last month following a similar warrant.

    He appeared in court where his lawyer described the arrest as an "abuse of process". Rancadore was refused bail.

  • France pulls out of Rwanda genocide commemorations

    The French government has announced that it is pulling out of the 20th anniversary commemorations on Monday for the Rwandan genocide.

    The decision follows an accusation by the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, that France participated in the mass killings in 1994.

    Mr Kagame has previously made similar allegations, which France has denied.

    The French foreign ministry said the remarks went against reconciliation efforts between the two countries.

    French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira has cancelled her plans to attend the events in Kigali on Monday, foreign ministry spokesman Romain Nadal says.
