  • Service Held For Holocaust Hero Sir Nicholas Winton

    A memorial service is being held for Sir Nicholas Winton, who rescued hundreds of children from the Holocaust in the months before World War Two.

    Some 400 people are attending event at London's Guildhall, including 28 of those he saved and Czech, Slovak and UK government representatives.

    Sir Nicholas organised the "Kindertransport" in which 669 mostly Jewish children came to Britain by train from Czechoslovakia in 1939. He died on 1 July last year, aged 106.

  • EgyptAir MS804 Crash

    An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo made two sharp turns before plunging into the Mediterranean Sea, Greece's defence minister says.

    Panos Kammenos said the Airbus A320 had "turned 90 degrees left and then a 360-degree turn to the right". It then dropped more than 25,000ft (7,620m) before disappearing from radar, he added.

    Egypt's civil aviation minister has said the possibility of a terror attack is stronger than technical failure.

    Sixty-six people were on board Flight MS804, most of them from Egypt or France. A Briton was among the passengers.

  • Man Arrested In Buckingham Palace Grounds

    A man has been arrested in the grounds of Buckingham Palace after scaling a perimeter wall, police have said.

    The 41-year-old was found in the palace grounds by officers seven minutes after an alarm was activated on Wednesday evening, according to the Met Police. The suspect, who was not armed, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a protected site and is in custody.

    It is understood that the Queen was at the palace at the time of the security breach.

    A woman who said she wanted to marry "Jihadi John" has been jailed for four years and six months for sharing so-called Islamic State propaganda.

    Zafreen Khadam, 32, was found guilty of 10 counts of disseminating terrorist publications after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. She shared links to execution videos and terrorist magazines online under usernames such as 'PrincessKuffar'.

  • Missing Chibok Girl Found In Nigeria

    One of the missing Chibok schoolgirls has been found in Nigeria, activists say, the first to be rescued since their capture two years ago.

    Activists told that Amina Ali Nkeki was found by a vigilante group on Tuesday in the huge Sambisa Forest, close to the border with Cameroon. In all, 218 girls remain missing after their abduction from a secondary school in north-east Nigeria in April 2014. The girls were taken by militants from the Boko Haram Islamist group.

  • World Powers Ready To Arm Libya's UN Backed Government

    The US and other world powers have said they are ready to arm Libya's UN-backed unity government to help it fight the self-styled Islamic State (IS) group.

    Speaking in Vienna, US Secretary of State John Kerry said world powers would back Libya in seeking exemption from a UN arms embargo. He said IS was a "new threat" to Libya and it was "imperative" it was stopped.

    Last month, the Libyan government warned that IS could seize most of the country if it was not halted soon.

  • Suicide Bomb Attacks In Iraq Kills Dozens

    Three bomb blasts in Baghdad have killed at least 53 people, medics say, the latest in a series of attacks in the Iraqi capital in the past week.

    A female suicide bomber is believed to have targeted a market in the northern, mainly Shia Muslim area of Shaab. The other bombs went off at a market in the neighbouring predominantly Shia district of Sadr City and among shoppers in Rashid, to the south.

    The jihadist group Islamic State (IS) said it carried out the Shaab attack.

  • Quarry Worker Discovers Human Head

    A severed human head has been found in a Cambridgeshire quarry.

    The head was found by a quarry worker at Mepal, between Chatteris and Ely, on Monday afternoon. It is not yet known whether the head was male or female.

    Officers are also searching a site 40 miles away in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, where they believe the head came from. Police stressed the discovery at Block Fen Drove was of a head and not a skull and that they were trying to establish how long the remains had been there. It has been removed and is being analysed by the Cambridgeshire Coroner.

  • Baghdad Gas Plant Targeted By IS

    The Islamic State (IS) group has staged a suicide attack on a gas factory near Baghdad in which 14 people were killed and 20 wounded, Iraqi officials say.

    The assault began when three car bombs exploded at the gate of the plant in Taji, north of the capital. Six men wearing explosive belts rushed in and blew up gas tanks, before security forces won back the facility.
