Axe Wielding Man Shot By Police In Hull

Police officers have shot and injured a 31-year-old man in a Hull street.

Humberside Police said armed officers had been sent to the Holderness Road area at around 09:20 GMT following reports of a man with an axe.

The man was shot on Francis Street about 20 minutes later. The man is receiving medical treatment. The force said the incident had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and an investigation is underway.

Chief Supt Scott Young said: «I can confirm a man was shot and injured on Francis Street in Hull. «Officers were attending a call to service on Holderness Road to a man with an axe.»

He said he was unable to give any further information while the IPCC was investigating. He did confirm the force was not looking for any other individuals in connection with the incident.

One builder working nearby said he heard gunshots. «I heard two fires, that’s all I heard really,» he said. «It was scary, a scary situation.»

Rachael, who was attending a training course in a nearby building, said she heard two «loud bangs and screaming». «Then we looked out the window and he was laid on the floor,» she said. «He had what looked like two large sort of cuts, slashes things low down and there was blood coming out of them. «There were about four or six (police officers) with him on the floor and he was trying to sit up, obviously he was bleeding quite a lot.»
