North Korea appears to be building new ballistic missiles despite recent warming ties with the Trump administration and pledges to denuclearise, reports say.
Unnamed US officials told the Washington Post that spy satellites had spotted continuing activity at a site that has produced ballistic missiles.
Reuters quotes an official as saying it is unclear how far the work has gone.
Donald Trump met North Korea’s Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June.
After the first meeting between sitting leaders from the two countries, the two men pledged to work towards denuclearisation. Mr Trump later said North Korea was «no longer a nuclear threat». But Mr Trump was criticised at home for making concessions without securing any firm commitment from Mr Kim to end the nuclear and missile programmes.
Handcuffed and helpless, Yevgeny Makarov is held face down on a desk as more than a dozen prison officers take it in turn to beat him.
They punch the soles of his feet first, then thrash them with truncheons. This is no frenzied, spontaneous attack. The methods are calculated to cause maximum pain. The guards have to rest, exhausted, between beatings.
The assault took place more than a year ago at Prison Number One in Yaroslavl, 272km (169 miles) north of Moscow.
The victim’s complaint was rejected at the time; an investigator concluded staff had used «appropriate» force.
Now this explosive evidence has been published by a newspaper, shocking Russians and prompting demands for justice.
«I watched the video without sound at first — and not to the end,» Yevgeny Makarov’s mother tells me, in her first interview since the footage emerged. Tatyana says she hasn’t slept properly since witnessing her son’s suffering. «I’m always in tears. I fall asleep seeing those guards’ faces, and hearing the groans and the beating. It’s very painful.»
A 20-year-old woman died and six people were injured when a suspected stolen car, being pursued by police, crashed with another car in Birmingham.
The woman was in a VW Golf that was in collision with an Audi A3 being chased by officers in Kingstanding on Sunday.
She died at the scene and the male driver in the car was seriously hurt.
Four occupants of the Audi, aged between 17 and 20, were taken to hospital and have since been arrested on suspicion of burglary. The driver of the Golf, a 22-year-old man, and a fifth occupant of the Audi, a 21-year-old man, remain in hospital. Both are in a critical condition.
John Evans, was at home watching TV, when the Golf smashed into his garden. «We were just sitting down watching the telly and then we heard a bang and this car came flying over,» he said.
North Korea has returned remains believed to be of 55 US troops killed during the Korean War, bringing renewed hope to families who have waited decades for closure.
The return of the remains, brought to a US base in South Korea, is the latest move in the cautious diplomacy between Washington and Pyongyang.
The repatriation was agreed at the June summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. It is hoped more will follow.
«It’s hard to live your life not knowing what happened to your loved one,» the daughter of one missing serviceman said ahead of Friday’s news.
The Singapore summit, where Mr Trump and Mr Kim agreed to work towards the «complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula», has been criticised for a lack of detail on when or how Pyongyang would renounce nuclear weapons. But the return of US remains was one of four points actually listed in that June declaration, and comes on the 65th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the 1950-1953 Korean War.
Shots were fired at armed police from a car during a chase through the streets of east London.
Officers responded to reports of people armed with a gun in Lascelles Close, Leytonstone, at about 22:45 BST on Thursday.
Shortly after a car failed to stop for officers who set off in pursuit.
Scotland Yard said «a number of shots were fired towards officers» and police also opened fire. Three people have been arrested.
A spokesman from the Metropolitan Police said the trio arrested on suspicion of attempted murder had been taken to an east London police station and remained in custody. «The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as is routine,» he added.
The Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents officers in the capital, said the shooting highlighted «the dangers our members face.»
