Chinese Man Accused Of Spying On US

A Chinese man has been arrested for allegedly spying on US engineers and scientists on behalf of Beijing, US prosecutors say.

Ji Chaoqun, 27, was arrested in Chicago and charged with acting as an illegal foreign agent in the US, according to the US attorney’s office.

Mr Ji came to the US in 2013 to study electrical engineering and enlisted in the US Army Reserves in 2016. He allegedly sought to provide details on eight people for recruitment.

Mr Ji is accused of working for an unnamed high-ranking intelligence officer, according to a criminal complaint filed in a Chicago court. Prosecutors say he targeted other Chinese nationals who were working as engineers and scientists, some of whom were US defence contractors, for potential recruitment.

He arrived from Beijing in August 2013 on a student visa and studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He later earned a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering in 2015.

The 38-year-old, a visitor to London from the Netherlands, was detained at the visitors’ entrance to the palace at about 12:45 BST on Sunday.

Scotland Yard said his possession of the device, which was low-powered and part of a keyring, was a genuine error, and that he posed no threat. The man was released without further action.

A spokesman said: «Officers are reminding visitors to the United Kingdom to ensure that any items that they are carrying comply with legislation in the UK. «This includes small knives and personal Taser-type devices, both of which may be considered offensive weapons or in breach of strict UK firearms laws.»

Parts of Buckingham Palace, which is the monarch’s official residence, are open to the public for 10 weeks each summer.

The Queen is currently at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on her summer break.

Two 15-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of planning to carry out far-right terrorism offences in Kent.

Police said the pair, both from Ramsgate, were arrested at their home addresses on suspicion of preparing for terrorist acts. Both of the teenagers are being questioned at a police station in the South East.

The South East Counter Terrorism Unit has confirmed the alleged offences involved far-right ideology.

Det Supt Nigel Doak said: «We treat the threat from the extreme right in exactly the same way as any other threat.» He said the arrests were planned and intelligence-led, and there was no immediate threat to the public.

«We are committed to tackling any and all ideologies which pose a threat to the public’s safety and security,» he added.
