Explosion At London Tube Station Non-Suspicious

A 23-year-old man has been arrested after an explosion at a north London Tube station left five people injured.

Witnesses described smelling “burning rubber” and seeing “six-foot flames” at the entrance to Southgate Underground station in Enfield on Tuesday evening.

Police believe the explosion was caused by a faulty drill battery.

The man was held on suspicion of an act likely to cause an explosion to injure or damage property, and endangering safety on the railway. The station was shut and a cordon set up after the explosion occurred at about 19:00 BST.

London Ambulance Service said they treated three people at the scene for minor injuries while two others were taken to hospital.

Former Soldier To Be Charged With 1988 Killing In County Tyrone

A soldier is to be charged with manslaughter by gross negligence over the 1988 killing of a Catholic man at an Army checkpoint.

Aidan McAnespie, 23, was hit by one of three bullets fired from a machine gun in Aughnacloy, County Tyrone as he walked through the checkpoint. He was on his way to a Gaelic football match.

The soldier who fired the shots was initially charged with manslaughter, but the charge was dropped in 1990.

Prosecutors have reviewed that decision and informed Mr McAnespie’s family.

The soldier, 48, was informed by the PPS of its intention to charge him via email on Tuesday morning. His first court appearance is expected to take place within the next three months.

Mr McAnespie’s family claimed he had been deliberately targeted after a sustained campaign of harassment by the Army.

Three Men Shot Dead At Swedish Internet Cafe

A shooting at an internet cafe in the southern Swedish city of Malmo has claimed the lives of three men.

Several others were wounded in the centre of the city late on Monday, when at least one attacker opened fire as the victims left the cafe.

Police said there was no indication of terrorism. Malmo has gained a reputation for violent crime.

Monday night’s attack – which occurred near a police station – is being linked to gangs and organised crime.

Witnesses reported hearing about 15 shots fired by an automatic weapon. The gunman is believed to have fled the scene by car.

One wounded man was seen being loaded into the getaway car. Three others were treated in hospital. Those killed were aged 19, 27 and 29, police said. At least one of them was known to police, Swedish media reported.

While deadly violence has risen in the Malmo area in recent years, the number of lethal attacks almost halved last year, falling from 30 to 17.

Conflict In Yemen Continues With Air Strikes On Main Airport

Pro-government forces in Yemen, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have launched air strikes on the airport that serves the key port city of Hudaydah.

They have also been fighting Houthi rebels on the ground with mortar fire. The pro-government forces said they had taken control of the airport on Saturday, but the rebels denied this.

Meanwhile the UN envoy to Yemen is holding a second day of talks in the capital Sanaa, aimed at securing a rebel withdrawal from Hudaydah.

Martin Griffiths is believed to have put forward a plan guaranteeing the safety of Houthi fighters if they pull out, leaving the harbour to be operated by the UN.

The only major port controlled by the Houthis, Hudaydah is seen as a lifeline for millions of Yemenis at risk of famine. The Houthis’ Saba news agency said the coalition had carried out five air strikes on the city. Saudi-owned al-Arabiya TV also said the airport had been hit.

The Houthis are demanding an end to the air strikes.

The Hudaydah offensive, which is being directed by the United Arab Emirates, began on Wednesday.
