Two police officers are being treated in hospital after it is understood they were stabbed during an incident in Inverclyde.

They had been called to an address in Gateside Gardens, Greenock, at 08:45. It is thought a male police officer was stabbed in the neck while a female officer was stabbed in the arm.

The male is believed to be in a serious condition while the female officer suffered minor arm injuries -both of their families have been told. They are being treated at Inverclyde Royal Hospital along with a man detained by police at the scene.

It has been reported the suspect may have run a short distance before being hit by two police vehicles.

The Scottish Police Federation tweeted: “A shocking attack and horrendous injuries to colleagues in Greenock. We are supporting them – and their families – at this time and the thoughts of all colleagues in Scotland are with them.”
