HMRC Store Millions Of Taxpayers Voices Without Consent

The voices of millions of taxpayers have been analysed and stored by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) without consent, privacy campaigners say.

Big Brother Watch says HMRC’s Voice ID system has collected 5.1 million audio signatures and accuses the department of creating “biometric ID cards by the back door”.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation.

HMRC says the service is secure and callers can choose not to use it.

The Voice ID scheme, which was launched last year, asks callers to repeat the phrase “my voice is my password” to register. Once this task is complete, they can use the phrase to confirm their identity when managing their taxes.

HMRC says this process helps speed up security procedures and improves access to its digital services.

United Nations Reports On Hundreds Of Deaths In Venezuela

Venezuelan security forces have carried out hundreds of arbitrary killings under the guise of fighting crime, the UN says in a new report.

The UN’s human rights body says it has credible accounts of security forces raiding poor neighbourhoods and killing young men, often in their homes.

The rule of law was “virtually absent” in the country, UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said. Venezuela has in the past dismissed human rights allegations as “lies”. The country is going through a protracted political and economic crisis.

Scores of protesters were killed in clashes during anti-government protests last year and the country is also experiencing hyperinflation and food shortages.

President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected in May after the opposition boycotted the vote.

Friend Of Female Terrorist Jailed For 28 Months

A woman who witnessed her friend preparing to carry out the first female-led terrorist attack in the UK has been jailed for 28 months.

Khawla Barghouthi also faces deportation to Tunisia after admitting failing to alert the authorities to Rizlaine Boular’s plan.

An Old Bailey judge told Barghouthi, 21, there was no doubt her friend would have gone ahead with the attack. Boular, her mother and her sister have all been convicted.

In April 2017, specialist counter-terrorism armed officers raided Barghouthi’s north-west London home, hours after a bugged conversation revealed that her friend Rizlaine Boular was inside and practising wielding a knife for an attack.

The recordings revealed that Boular was preparing to attack people in the Westminster area, apparently egged on by her younger sister and mother.

Taliban Ceasefire Ends As 13 Soldiers Killed In Attack

The Taliban have launched their first attack on Afghan forces since their ceasefire for the Eid festival expired.

The defence ministry says 13 soldiers died in the assault on an army check point in the western province of Badghis, while local officials put the death toll higher.

The Taliban ended their three-day truce on Sunday night – as the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr ended.

The government said it would continue to observe a unilateral ceasefire.

According to defence ministry figures, 13 soldiers were killed and eight injured when Taliban fighters attacked the check point overnight. The Taliban also suffered casualties, the statement says. But the head of provincial council, Abdul Aziz Bek, said that as many as 30 soldiers had died.
