Luton Man Jailed For Six Years For Plotting Terror Act

A terror plotter who offered to wear a suicide vest and «press the button on the same day» has been jailed.

Mubashir Jamil, 22, was convicted of preparing acts of terrorism after being caught in a covert police operation.

During his trial, the Old Bailey heard he wanted to join so-called Islamic State (IS) to rid himself of «evil spirits».

Jamil, from Luton, was jailed for six years, part of which will be served in a secure hospital. The defendant, an Amazon warehouse worker and former Challney High School for Boys pupil, became obsessed with the idea of martyrdom after surfing the internet for IS propaganda, the court had heard.

A former grade-A student, he was caught after talking to an undercover officer using encrypted messages on an online app. He had told the officer he would blow himself up in Britain if he could not fight for so-called Islamic State in Syria. Jamil told the officer: «If you or some brother you know can put an explosive belt on me and tell me how to press, as soon as possible for security reasons, I can do something in the UK even tomorrow after I find a good target.»

Eight People Rescued After US Navy Aircraft Crashes

Eight people have been rescued after a US Navy aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers crashed off the coast of Japan, the defence ministry has said.

It says that preliminary US military reports indicated that engine failure may have caused the crash.

The Navy did not say what kind of aircraft was involved, but Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have said it was a C-2 transport aircraft. The aircraft was travelling to a US aircraft carrier in the Philippine Sea.

Japanese and American rescuers raced to get to the stricken plane, which ditched in seas off the remote Japanese reef of Okinotori.

The crash follows a spate of US Navy accidents in East Asia in recent months, some fatal. Ten personnel died in August, when the USS John McCain collided with a tanker near Singapore. Two months earlier, in June, the USS Fitzgerald smashed into a cargo ship off the coast of Japan, killing seven.

1990’s Bosnian Commander Jailed For Life Over Genocide

Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has been jailed for life for genocide and other atrocities in the 1990s Bosnian war.

Known as the «Butcher of Bosnia», Mladic led forces during the massacre of Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) in Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo.

The UN tribunal in The Hague convicted him on 10 of the 11 charges.

Mladic, 74, was not in court when the sentence was read out. He had been removed for shouting at the judges.
They had rejected a request by his lawyer to halt proceedings because of Mladic’s high blood pressure. At the start of the session, he appeared relaxed, smiling and gesturing to the cameras.

The verdict was watched by victims and their relatives in a memorial centre near Srebrenica, and followed by dozens of people who gathered outside the courtroom, carrying pictures of those who died or were still missing.

President Mugabe Resigns

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has resigned, parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda has said.

A letter from Mr Mugabe said that the decision was voluntary and that he had made it to allow a smooth transfer of power, the Reuters news agency reports.

The surprise announcement halted an impeachment hearing that had begun against him. Lawmakers roared in jubilation and people have begun celebrating in the streets.

Mr Mugabe had previously refused to resign despite last week’s military takeover and days of protests. He has been in power since independence in 1980.

What triggered the moves to oust him was his dismissal of Emmerson Mnangagwa as vice-president two weeks ago. That decision was seen by many as clearing the way for Mr Mugabe’s wife, Grace, to succeed her husband as leader. It riled the military leadership, who stepped in and put Mr Mugabe under house arrest.

Suicide Bomber Kills Dozens Of Worshippers In Nigeria

At least 50 people have been killed in a suicide bombing in the eastern Nigerian state of Adamawa, police say.

A bomber struck inside a mosque packed with worshippers during morning prayers in the town of Mubi. Witness Abubakar Sule told AFP news agency that it appeared the bomber was part of the congregation.

No-one has said they were behind the bombing but the Islamist militants Boko Haram typically target crowded places in northern Nigeria.

Some 20,000 people have been killed in Boko Haram’s eight-year insurgency. Boko Haram militants have recently stepped up suicide bombings in Nigeria’s north-east after the military recaptured territories previously controlled by the group.

At least 45 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack in the same state last December. In that attack two female suicide bombers detonated their explosives in a busy market.
