Aung San Suu Kyi Claims Fake News Is Helping Terrorists

Myanmar’s de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has claimed that the crisis in Rakhine state is being distorted by a «huge iceberg of misinformation».

In her first comments on the latest Rohingya crisis, she said tensions were being fanned by fake news promoting the interests of terrorists. Ms Suu Kyi made the comments in a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, her office said.

More than 123,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh in two weeks. The latest outbreak of violence has sent waves of refugees fleeing the country, which is also called Burma.

The latest government statement, carried by local media, said Ms Suu Kyi told Mr Erdogan that her government had «already started defending all the people in Rakhine in the best way possible». Ms Suu Kyi is quoted as saying: «We know very well, more than most, what it means to be deprived of human rights and democratic protection. «So we make sure that all the people in our country are entitled to protection of their rights as well as, the right to, and not just political but social and humanitarian defence.»

President Putin Deems North Korea Sanctions Useless

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said pursuing further sanctions against North Korea is «useless», saying «they’d rather eat grass than give up their nuclear programme».

The US said on Monday it would table a new UN resolution on tougher sanctions in the wake of the latest test of a nuclear bomb by the North on Sunday.

Mr Putin also said that the ramping up of «military hysteria» could lead to global catastrophe. He said diplomacy was the only answer.

China, the North’s main ally, has also called for a return to negotiations.

Meanwhile, North Korea’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Han Tae-song, said his country’s recent «self-defence measures» were a «gift package addressed to the US». «The US will receive more gift packages from my country as long as it relies on reckless provocations and futile attempts to put pressure on the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea),» Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.

South Korea Claim North Korea Are Preparing More Missile Launches

South Korea says it has seen indications that the North is preparing more missile launches, possibly an intercontinental ballistic missile.

It said it was strengthening its controversial US-made Thaad missile defence system after the North’s test of a nuclear bomb at the weekend. The South has carried out live-fire exercises in response to the test.

The US has warned that any threat to itself or its allies will be met with a «massive military response».

The North says it tested a hydrogen bomb that can fit on to a long-range missile.

Pyongyang has repeatedly defied UN sanctions and international pressure by developing nuclear weapons and testing missiles, and the provocations have only intensified.

In the past two months it has conducted intercontinental ballistic missile tests, sending one over mainland Japan into the Pacific Ocean. It has also threatened to fire missiles towards the US Pacific territory of Guam.
