Netherlands Warns Citizens On Travel To Turkey After Row

The Netherlands has warned its citizens over travel to Turkey as a row between the countries shows no sign of abating.

Germany, Austria and the Netherlands blocked Turkish attempts to hold rallies in those countries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed retaliation, accusing them of «Nazism».

On Monday, the Dutch foreign ministry issued a new travel warning, urging its citizens in Turkey to take care and noting the new «diplomatic tensions». The warning to «avoid gatherings and crowded places» came as Turkey’s foreign ministry lodged a formal protest with the Dutch envoy.

Meanwhile, the Dutch deputy prime minister, Lodewijk Asscher, said that «to be called Nazis by a regime which is walking backwards in regards to human rights is just disgusting».

Seven Injured In German Axe Attack

Seven people have been injured in an axe attack at the main railway station in the western German city of Duesseldorf, police say.

The attack happened at about 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT) on Thursday.

One man has been arrested. The 36-year-old suspect from the former Yugoslavia suffers from psychological problems, Duesseldorf police said.

They said the assailant «attacked people at random». No fatalities have been reported. One person was injured seriously, and the attacker was also badly injured after jumping from a bridge while trying to escape, police said. He is being treated in a hospital.

A large number of police were deployed to search the area for possible further suspects. Rail traffic was halted, but is now reported to have resumed. The motive for the attack is unclear, and police are not describing it as being related to terrorism.

German federal police earlier tweeted a warning to the public not to engage in speculation.

Many Killed At Iraq Wedding By IS Suicide Bombers

Two suicide bombers have blown themselves up, killing 26 people, as wedding guests gathered in a village near the Iraqi city of Tikrit.

So-called Islamic State said two of its fighters had carried out the attack in the village of Hajaj on Wednesday.

The first detonated an explosive vest among men who were dancing, then a second bomber targeted those who had gathered to help, officials said.

Most of the dead were children, a local government spokesman told AP.

IS said it had targeted a gathering of the Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of mostly Shia paramilitaries backed by Iran.

In a post on its channels on the messaging app Telegram, IS said the attackers had clashed with members of the group before detonating their explosives. At least 25 people were wounded.

War Memorial Unveiled By Queen In London

A memorial dedicated to those who served in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars has been unveiled by the Queen in central London on Thursday.

The sculpture by Paul Day also marks the contribution made by civilians in the conflicts. It is formed of two stone monoliths and a bronze medallion. Its unveiling in Victoria Embankment Gardens followed a service for 2,500 veterans on Horse Guards Parade.

More than 800 UK military personnel and civilians died in the three wars. Forty-seven members of the armed forces died in Iraq in the 1990-91 conflict, 179 were killed in the second Iraq war from 2003-09 and 456 died in Afghanistan between 2001-14. In addition, 43 UK civilians were killed in the second Iraq war and 101 in Afghanistan.

Before the unveiling the Queen and other members of the Royal Family attended a «drumhead» service — a religious service held in the field of battle which uses drums as an improvised altar — with veterans and other guests.

Dozens Killed At Military Hospital In Kabul By IS Gunmen

More than 30 people have been killed after attackers dressed as doctors stormed the largest military hospital in Kabul, Afghan officials say.

Militants armed with guns and grenades gained entry after one detonated explosives at a hospital gate and then opened fire on staff and patients.

Commandos who landed on the Sardar Daud hospital roof killed all four attackers after several hours of fighting. The so-called Islamic State (IS) group has claimed the attack. The Taliban has denied any involvement.

More than 50 people were also wounded, the defence ministry said.

President Ashraf Ghani said the attack at the 400-bed hospital «trampled all human values». «In all religions, a hospital is regarded as an immune site and attacking it is attacking the whole of Afghanistan,» he said.

The attack began at 09:00 local time (04:30 GMT). One hospital staff member who was able to get out saw an attacker «wearing a white coat holding a Kalashnikov and opening fire on everyone, including the guards, patients and doctors».
