St Paul’s Cathedral Bomb Plotter Charged

A man has been charged in Norway over his alleged role in a terror plot to bomb St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

The Norwegian man — who has not been named — was originally arrested in September 2019. Safiyya Shaikh was jailed for life last year after admitting she had planned to blow herself up inside the building.

Protesters Demand Justice Over Police Shooting Of 20 Year Old Black Man In Minneapolis

Tear gas has been fired and a curfew imposed amid angry protests after police fatally shot a black man in a traffic stop in the US city of Brooklyn Center, just north of Minneapolis.

The man has been identified by relatives as 20-year-old Daunte Wright. Brooklyn Center’s mayor issued a curfew that lasted until 06:00 (11:00 GMT), telling people to «be safe, go home».

Tensions in Minneapolis are high as the trial of a former officer accused of killing George Floyd takes place.

Tensions Rise Between Russia And Ukraine

A top Russian official has warned that Moscow could intervene to help Russian-speaking residents in eastern Ukraine if Ukraine launches an all-out assault on separatists there.

Russian-backed separatist rebels and Ukrainian troops have been clashing in the east of the country. Russia has also been building up troops on the border with Ukraine.

The official, Dmitry Kozak, said that Russian forces could intervene to «defend» Russian citizens. «Everything depends on the scale of the conflagration,» he said. He is deputy head of Russia’s presidential administration.

Police Say Disorder In Belfast On A Scale Not Seen In Years

Rioting in Belfast on Wednesday night was on a scale not seen in Northern Ireland for years, police have said.

During several hours of violence, police officers were attacked, petrol bombs were thrown and a bus was burnt. Eight officers were injured at an interface between loyalist and nationalist areas in west Belfast.

Northern Ireland’s power-sharing executive said it was «gravely concerned» by recent street violence and has called for calm to be restored. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also condemned the disorder.

Turkey Sentences 22 Former Soldiers To Life For Failed Coup

Former top-ranking officers in the Turkish army have been jailed for life in a mass trial of 497 defendants accused over the failed July 2016 coup.

Among those convicted were two men who stormed the public broadcaster to have the coup declared on live TV. Tens of thousands of people have been held since the failed coup, which killed 251 civilians.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed the plot on a movement led by US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen. Mr Gulen, once an ally of the president, denied involvement.
